The town of Agoo in the province of La Union has many things travelers look for in an ideal destination: beaches, interesting sights, history, and good food. Formerly a part of Pangasinan, this town, named after the pine-like trees found on its riverbanks, is the oldest town in the province.
Founded in 1578 by two Franciscan missionaries, Agoo is a favorite destination during the Holy Week for those who wish to witness its Good Friday processions. The Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Charity is the only minor basilica in La Union and is one of the few that are found in the Philippines. Multicolored rays of light bathe the minor basilica’s altar due to the stained glass windows of the dome looming above it. Marian devotees can also head to the Plaza de la Virgen, which is only a street away.
History buffs can enjoy the museum found in the premises or head to the Museo de Iloko, which houses artifacts important to Agoo’s heritage and culture.
Like many places in La Union, Agoo has its share of beaches boasting clear blue waters beachgoers can swim, snorkel or dive in. The Agoo-Damortis National Seashore Park, which includes the Agoo Beach, is a popular destination and was once an important port for local and Japanese traders during the Spanish era.
Those taking the Marcos Highway to get in and out of La Union will be able to spot a giant statue of an eagle called the Eagle of the North.
A trip to any province in the Ilocos Region will not be complete without partaking in its scrumptious cuisine. Popular in Agoo is a dish called dinengdeng, a soup dish made up of vegetables, grilled fish, and bagoong, a condiment made out of fermented fish. The dish is so popular in town that they celebrate the Dinengdeng Festival annually on May 6 with a fluvial parade, lots of street dancing, and — of course — a dinengdeng eating contest.
Stop by The Farm Agoo for a wide array of Filipino dishes you can enjoy with stunning views and rustic, country farm-inspired interiors. The restaurant’s garden pavilion, nipa hut, and farm garden will surely make a good meal even more memorable.
