Alabang

Alabang

In the days of huge mobile phones, bell-bottom jeans, and crimped hair, the southernmost cities of Metro Manila were nothing but rolling hills and forests of Mango trees. What used to be pure open space is now blossoming into the go-to place for good food, entertainment, and relaxation in the South.

If you find yourself in the Barangay of Alabang, don’t hurry to the nearby cities of Makati and Tagaytay just yet. Alabang has a lot in store, especially if you’re on the hunt for delicious eats.

Head to Molito, a complex of unique restaurants and popular establishments. Fill up on authentic ramen from Ramen Yushoken, known for its 12-hour pork bone broth and strict “no take-out” rule, or grab a pint during a night out with friends at Draft.

Right across the Molito complex is Alabang Town Center. The mall is simply called “Town” by the residents of the surrounding subdivisions and villages, who make up most of the mall’s population. Shoppers can relax in cafes like Mary Grace, famous for its ensaymada (bread pastry topped with cheese) and hot chocolate combination that was featured on CNN.

Alabang Town Center offers a wide variety of restaurants to choose from, whether you’re craving for Filipino food done right at Abe’s or American style burgers in Chili’s. You can catch the latest blockbusters at Alabang Town Center’s Cinema, or bring the whole family to the mall’s playground and pet-friendly areas.

Another mall to visit is Festival Supermall, located in Filinvest, Alabang. It’s the place in the south to get great bargains and shop ’til you drop. The gigantic mall houses over 700 stores, an indoor amusement park complete with a roller-coaster, and a carousel. The mall also has a train ride that tours kids around the mall.

The hotels in Alabang don’t just serve as a place to drop your bags and rest your head, for they are also places frequented by local foodies.

Bellevue Hotel is the destination for exquisite Asian cuisine. Guests can feast like an emperor in its Chinese fine dining restaurant, Phoenix Court, or taste authentic Japanese dishes in Hatsune, which means “First Sound of Spring.”

Vivere Hotel offers a one-of-a-kind dining experience in The Nest, which is situated near the top of the 31-storey building. Dine on scrumptious comfort food with a modern twist while being treated to sweeping views of the city skyline.

Making waves in the food scene is The Black Pig, located in the Commercenter, Alabang. This charcuterie, bar, and restaurant is headed by Chef Carlos Garcia, formerly a chef in the London-based Michelin-star restaurant, Gauthier Soho. Customers feast on beautifully plated dishes made with fresh and local ingredients, and sip on draft beers or fine wine. Their menu depends on what Chef Garcia finds interesting at the market, constantly giving both old and new customers something to look forward to.

There’s no need to travel far if you’re looking to burn those extra calories from food tripping around Alabang. You can rent a bike for ₱100 (About $2.50) per hour and cycle on the designated traffic-free roads of Filinvest. Nearby is a public running and bike trail with sloping hills and dirt roads that test your limits.

Near Filinvest is Westgate, a hub of health and wellness establishments that keep you moving. Break a sweat in Fitness First, 360 Fitness Club, or Beyond Yoga, which are all within walking distance of each other. Good eats like Conti’s Bakeshop and Restaurant and Bonellis by Neil’s Kitchen are also found here.

For a scenic drive with the windows down, or maybe a couple of rounds on the driving range, head to the largest subdivision in the city: Ayala Alabang Village. It’s home to the Alabang Country Club, a private club with an 18-hole golf course, driving range, Olympic size swimming pool, badminton and tennis courts, and a bowling alley.

Ayala Alabang Village has parks and basketball courts scattered around for its active residents. The Cuenca Covered Courts feature not only a basketball court, playground, and football field, but also a small Starbucks and Rustan’s Fresh Supermarket.

Whether you’re a foodie with a beast in his belly or a city girl in need of a new environment, this small, laid back town in the South will keep you coming back for more.
