Albay

Albay

Mention the province of Albay and most people will immediately think of the majestic Mayon Volcano. It’s almost impossible to miss this “crown jewel” when you visit Albay, but in truth it is just one of the many attractions Albay takes pride in. Take a trip to Albay, witness Mayon up close, and discover the other breathtaking sights and culinary delights the province has to offer

Mayon Volcano should be one of the first destinations on any Albay traveler’s list. While its iconic “perfect cone” is visible from almost anywhere in the province, the view from the provincial capital, Legazpi City, is definitely one of the most captivating.

Journey to Legazpi and visit the famous Cagsawa Ruins, where you’ll find the weathered stone belfry of Cagsawa Church standing proudly with Mayon Volcano in the background. Take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque seaside road, Legazpi Boulevard, or catch a stunning view of Legazpi and Albay Gulf on the summits of Ligñon Hill and Kapuntukan Hill.

A short ride away from Legazpi City, you’ll find the centuries-old Church of Nuestra Señora de la Porteria. Nicknamed the Daraga Church, this National Cultural Treasure is said to be the crowning glory of Albay’s religious architecture.

After visiting Daraga, you may want to go on a tour of Albay’s other historical churches. Check out the San Juan Bautista Church in Tabaco City, another National Cultural Treasure built with stones bearing the unique markings of the Masons. You can also visit St. Dominic de Guzman Church and the Camalig Church, which was built from solid blocks of lava rock.

If you’re more of a beach person, the pure black beaches of Albay are definite must-sees. Any traveler will surely be enchanted by the sight of Albay’s shining blue waters crashing against the jet-black shores of Sogod Beach, Tiwi, Joroan, and Sto. Domingo. If you’re wondering about the sand’s peculiar color, it is actually a result of Albay’s volcanic history and the interaction between hot lava and seawater.

Those feeling adventurous can also explore the pristine waters and hidden shores of Cagraray Island, Batan Island, Rapu-Rapu Island, and San Miguel Island, which all lie off the coast of Albay. Go diving in the San Miguel Island Marine Reserve and discover a world of colorful coral reefs and sea creatures.

Travelers can also explore Albay’s inland natural attractions, starting with the province’s countless waterfalls. Cool down in the waters of Vera Falls and Palale Falls, enjoy the natural spring waters of Bugsucan Falls, or hike through the Malilipot Forest and explore the seven-waterfall complex of Busay Falls.

If you’re looking for something a little more unique, try taking a bamboo raft through the Naglaus Underground River or visiting the Nag-aso Boiling Lake. This 3-hectare lake can reach a temperature of up to 100° Celsius, and is said to be hot enough to boil an egg in 10 minutes.

Don’t forget buy some of Albay’s famous abaca products from malls or public markets. Treat yourself as well to some signature delicacies like laing (vegetables in spicy coconut milk), pinangat (fish in coconut milk), and Bicol express (pork in spicy coconut milk) during your visit. That spicy Bicolano kick is sure to wake you up when you’re feeling tired from your adventures.
