Angono

Art lovers will certainly find themselves at home in Angono, Rizal.

Located just an hour outside of Metro Manila, Angono is known as the “Arts Capital of the Philippines.” It is the hometown and haven of many painters, musicians, photographers and playwrights, including National Artists Carlos Francisco and Lucio San Pedro.

In fact, the oldest known work of Philippine art can be found here: The Angono Petroglyphs, which are over 100 human and animal figures etched onto a stone wall.

Art is a family affair here, with the Blanco and the Nemiranda families each having their own museum to showcase their art as well as studios where they can teach others how to paint and sculpt.

Even Angono’s annual Higantes Festival is an art event. Held every November 22 and 23, the festival has locals parade around giant effigies, known as higantes. Standing anywhere from ten to twelve feet tall, the effigies were originally made to mock the Spanish landlords who used to occupy the town during the country’s period under Spanish rule. Nowadays though, the higantes are used for more festive means.

Angono isn’t just an arts capital, it’s a culinary one as well. The town is known for its fried itik (duck), usually served with sweet chili sauce, and minaluto, steamed fish or boiled egg with rice, wrapped in a banana leaf.

But if you’re one who’s a little more adventurous with their food, check out Balaw-Balaw Restaurant and Art Gallery for more exotic Filipino dishes. The place has fare like Soup No.5, a broth made out of bull testicles, and ginataang kuhol, snails cooked in coconut milk. Don’t worry, Balaw-Balaw also has “normal” dishes too, like lechon kawali and pancit.

Balaw-Balaw also houses the art collection of Perdigon Vocalan, the restaurant’s founder. The restaurant is full of various paintings, sculptures, and woodcarvings, making for a dining experience that you can’t have anywhere else.

Angono may be the arts capital of the country, but you don’t need to be an artist to enjoy what the town has to offer.
