Antipolo

Anyone looking to enjoy the scenery of the Metro Manila skyline knows that Antipolo City in Rizal is one of the best places to go. Named after the tipolo, or breadfruit tree, the city is home to many picturesque and one-of-a-kind destinations that are all located less than an hour away from the metro.

Antipolo’s commanding view of Metro Manila makes it a popular spot for social gatherings. You can take your pick among the many restaurants and bars overlooking the distant metropolis and watch its buildings light up one by one as the sun sets.

You can also unleash your indulgent side and spend a night or two at Luljetta’s Hanging Gardens and Spa, a nature-filled sanctuary set in the mountain resort of Antipolo. You can sample traditional Filipino delicacies and relax in its villas and pools directly overlooking Laguna de Bay and Metro Manila.

One of the city’s major attractions is the Antipolo Cathedral, which contains Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, otherwise known as “Birhen ng Antipolo,” or “Virgin of Antipolo.” This 17th-century relic is a wooden image of the Blessed Virgin Mary that was venerated in the Philippines.

Other tourist favorites are the Boso-boso Church, Hinulugang Taktak Waterfalls, and Mystical Cave. According to local legend, “holy images” can be found alongside the seven-story cave’s stalactites and stalagmites.

Folks from the city also enjoy flocking to Pinto Art Museum, a stunning contemporary art complex of open-air Mediterranean-inspired galleries and well-manicured gardens. These are connected by wooden staircases that wind up and down the property’s uneven terrain – which also houses Pinto’s weekend cafe, Cafe Tan-Aw by Peppermill.

When it comes to unique and unusual spots in Antipolo, Pinto is just the tip of the iceberg. The city is home to a number of unique establishments and hidden gems like Eggs for Breakfast Cafe, Yellow Lantern Cafe, Tipulo – Filipino Modern Cuisine, and the Crescent Moon Cafe and Studio Pottery.

Each joint adds its own signature twist to your dining experience. Crescent Moon Cafe and Studio Pottery, for example, serves whatever is fresh and available for the day. The cafe also sells handmade ceramics by Lanelle Abueva-Fernando, niece of the National Artist for Sculpture, Napoleon Abueva.

Don’t forget to stop by pasalubong vendors in markets or along certain streets during your stay. They offer some of Antipolo’s best traditional delicacies like suman, or “sticky rice,” and kasoy, or “cashew nuts” – perfect for snacking on on the way back down to the city.
