Baguio

If you’re looking for a break from the intense Philippine heat and humidity, take a road trip to the mountains of Baguio. The crisp air riddled with the scent of pine trees and loads of activities for guests of all ages make this city a popular haunt for locals and tourists.

Baguio was established as the summer capital of the Philippines during the American occupation in the 1900’s. Along with the title came the construction of roads, residential areas, and parks, mainly for the use of Insular Government officials and American soldiers. The city plan was conceived by architect and urban planner Daniel H. Burnham. Much of his designs remain in the city and his namesake park, save for a couple of souvenir stands and food stalls.

The city was destroyed by bombings during World War II and a devastating earthquake in 1990, but was quickly rebuilt and developed into one of the top Philippine destinations it is today.

Finding a place to stay isn’t difficult with the many hotels, resorts, country clubs, inns, and lodges available in Baguio. Popular choices of lodging include The Manor and the Baguio Country Club. You can also rent privately owned rooms and cabins for a more rustic experience. Try checking in at a serviced apartment or bed and breakfast for good old Philippine hospitality at a lesser cost.

Outdoor markets are definitely more enjoyable in Baguio thanks to the cool weather. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along Session Road for souvenirs and amazing bargains. Drop by the Wood Carvers Village for quality handcrafted goods. You can also check out Harrison Road for late night thrift shopping and local street food.

Reconnect with nature by visiting the many parks of Baguio. Take in awe-inspiring views at Mines View Park, go boating in Burnham Park, or hop on a pony for a ride around Wright Park. You can also challenge yourself by hiking through Camp John Hay’s Yellow Trail or cycling on Baguio’s zigzag roads.

The Tam-Awan Village is the perfect place to learn about Baguio’s thriving ethnic group, the Igorots. Guests can walk through typical Igorot homes and view indigenous art forms. The village also hosts art workshops and cultural shows.

The art scene in Baguio is very much alive. Explore the Bencab Museum, which features sculptures, paintings, and drawings by national artist Benedicto Cabrera. Grab a bite to eat in a cafe like Oh My Gulay, which only serves vegetarian meals in its nature-inspired art space. The Ili Likha Artist Village is a great space for both artists and diners. The multi-level village surrounds its guests in artworks and installations, often made out of recycled materials, and serves everything from hot chocolate to stews over rice.

Complete your trip by indulging in Baguio’s wide range of scrumptious treats. Excite your taste buds by going for a private dining experience or trying a street vendor’s Baguio spin on the classic taho (soft tofu with sago pearls and brown sugar syrup). Stock up your pantry with ube (purple yam) jams, strawberry preserves, and other local sweets from the Good Shepherd Convent, or go straight to the source and grab some strawberries from the Strawberry Farm in La Trinidad. Finally, you can warm yourself up with a hot chocolate from Cafe by the Ruins.

This American-built city is a world of art, culture, leisure, and great food. You’ll definitely need to stay more than a day to truly experience all that Baguio has to offer.
