Baler

Mention Baler and most people will immediately think of surfing. Given its killer waves and unspoiled beaches, it’s no wonder why the town has become so famous as a surfer’s paradise. Known as the “birthplace of Philippine surfing,” this capital of Aurora province is a prime tropical destination rich in natural wonders, historical significance, and adrenaline-pumping attractions.

Sunbathers and newbie surfers will enjoy the friendly waves and grey sands of Sabang Beach, the town’s most well-known surfing spot. Just a short walk away from the Baler Town Proper is Charlie’s Point, where more experienced surfers can ride its medium-quality waves. Locally known as Kagewad, this spot famous for its iconic appearance in the film Apocalypse Now.

One place that hardcore surfers shouldn’t miss is Cobra Reef in Cemento Beach. This surf spot is highly sought after among professional surfers because of its magnificent, 14-foot-high waves. Advanced surfers can also check out the highly prized Lindy’s Point, where clashing waters from the town river and Pacific Ocean form exhilarating, sharp break waves.

Aside from surfing, travelers can also enjoy water activities like paragliding, wind surfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Catch a glimpse of the world beneath Baler’s azure waters by snorkeling in the Lukso-Lukso Islets and Diguisit Bay, where you’ll also find stunning rock formations.

After a long day of beach-hopping and swimming, visitors can relax in the shady bamboo huts of the Aniao Islets or along the picturesque shores of Dicasalarin Cove, a secluded beach tucked away within towering rock formations.

Known as one of Baler’s best kept secrets, Dicasalarin Cove is where the verdant foothills of the Sierra Madre mountain range meet the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. This privately-owned beach is favored by tourists because of its white sands, stunning vista, and rugged, unspoiled natural charm.

Venture away from Baler’s renowned surfing spots and you’ll find plenty of other natural wonders to explore. One of the most famous natural attractions in Aurora is the majestic, 600-year-old, 60-meter-tall Balete Tree, which was dubbed as the official “Millennium Tree of the Philippines.” You can easily reach it from Baler by taking a quick trip to the nearby town of Maria Aurora.

Those feeling adventurous can journey through the town’s thick forests and rugged trails to experience the flowing spring waters of Banju Springs or the cascades of Ditumabo Falls.

Aside from being a surfing hotspot, Baler is also a town steeped in national history. Discover the town’s past by taking a walking tour of its historical landmarks and heritage sites. Start with the famous Baler Church, which served as the last Spanish stronghold in the Philippines during the infamous 11-month Siege of Baler.

Pass by the Aurora Quezon House and the Quezon Memorial Park, which honors the past Philippine president Manuel L. Quezon and his birthplace, Baler. Behind the park’s Quezon Monument, you’ll find the Museo de Baler, a two-storey museum that houses various items collected from the town’s major historical moments.

You can also climb the historic Ermita Hill for a picturesque view of Casiguran Bay, Sabang Beach, and other nearby islets. Formerly known as Mt. Castillo, this site became famous when a handful of locals survived a devastating tsunami in 1735 by seeking refuge on the hill’s peak. At the foot of the hill you’ll find statues depicting their struggle to escape the tsunami’s waves.

You might find yourself with quite a huge appetite after a day of non-stop surfing, beach-hopping, and exploring. Luckily, Baler has a wide selection of restaurants that can cater to any adventurer’s cravings. Some favorites include the all day buffet at Gerry Shan’s Place and the assorted food carts at The Rolling Store.

And if you’re in the mood for grilled seafood and meat, head to Baler Surfer Grill, Yolly’s Ihaw-Ihaw, or Yellowfin Bar and Grill. Make sure to pass by Nanay Pacing’s Cafe too for tasty homemade sweets like suman (glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk), espasol (local rice cake dusted with toasted rice flour), mango tarts, rice cake in latik syrup, and decadent coco jam made with pure coconut milk.
