Heading up north to the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) usually means heading to its more well-known mountainous destinations, like Baguio in Benguet and Sagada in Mountain Province. If you’re in the mood to head somewhere new, visit Abra and see the hidden gems in the province.
Bangued, the province’s capital, is home to many ancestral houses that have stood the test of time. This includes the former home of Quintin Paredes, a lawyer and legislator who was both a former congressman of the province and former senate president.
You can also visit the St. James the Elder Cathedral, which was built by the Augustinians, and the San Lorenzo Ruiz Shrine, a cemetery chapel dedicated to the country’s first martyr.
Nature lovers must include the Cassamata Hill National Park in their itinerary. Tourists can find the Victoria Park within its premises, a Marian shrine, and a view deck providing tourists a panoramic view of the capital as well as Mount Banti Goolong, known more famously as the Sleeping Beauty Mountain.
If you don’t mind hiking for an hour or two, head up to the Sapilang Falls in Barangay Sagap and scream to your heart’s content as you jump from one of its multiple tiers into the crystal clear cool waters down below.
A trip to Bangued won’t be complete without dropping by the Calaba Bridge. Stand on the walkway and breathe in the fresh air as you admire the stunning picturesque sight of the rugged mountains and flowing river of the Abra Valley.
