Bauang

One of the top beach destinations in the surfing hotspot, La Union province, is Bauang, an urban municipality famous for its 14 coastal towns, fine-sand beaches, and scenic sunsets. This “Fruit Capital of La Union” also takes pride in its thriving fruit industry, which produces high-grade varieties of fruits like grapes, papaya, mangoes, dragonfruit, and the iconic guapple.

Plenty of beach options await travelers in barangays like Taberna, Baccuit Norte, Baccuit Sur, Paringao, and Pagdalagan Sur. You won’t have to worry about accommodations either, since Bauang houses plenty of beach resorts built to cater to every type of budget.

Just a stone’s throw away from the shore, you’ll find a stretch of popular beachfront hotels including the Coconut Grove Beach Resort, Cabana Beach Resort, Bali Hai Beach Resort, and the China Sea Beach Resort. Another favorite spot among beach lovers is the White House Beach Resort, where guests can enjoy a stunning view of the sea from the resort’s infinity pool.

One architectural wonder you might not want to miss is the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. Here, you can bear witness to over four centuries of La Union’s rich Christian history, which remains carefully preserved through this stunning piece of Spanish colonial architecture.

Also known as Bauang Church or the Church of the Poor, this structure of adobe stones and red bricks was first founded in 1580 by Augustinian missionaries in La Union. After touring its historic walls up close, guests can also take a stroll in the sprawling green park fronting the church.

Your Bauang experience doesn’t have to end after touring its beaches and the Bauang Church. Believe it or not, Bauang is also home to another huge attraction: grape farms, where tourists and locals alike can enjoy picking fresh grapes straight from the vines. Unknown to many, these farms have been producing grapes in the Philippines since the early 1970s and 1980s.

If you want to experience picking grapes for yourself, head to the thriving graperies of Lomboy Farms and Gapuz Grape Farms, two of the oldest and biggest names in Bauang’s grape industry. Once you arrive at the farm, you’ll be greeted by rows and rows of trellises covered in green vines and tight bunches of green, purple, and reddish grapes.

Aside from touring the scenic vineyards, guests can also try their hand at grape-picking, learn about the history of the farms, and enjoy a boodle fight-type meal while taking in the beautiful and peaceful scenery.

Bauang is also famous for its guapple fruits, or “guavas as big as apples,” which you can find in fruit stalls along the municipality’s main roads. Don’t forget to pass by a local market or souvenir shop on your way out to grab some of their unique guapple by-products like guapple bread, buchi, chutney, gulaman, marmalade, siopao, preserves, puto, jelly, polvoron, and tarts.
