Benguet

Benguet

The landlocked province of Benguet lies on the southern tip of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). It is a mountainous province, for part of the Cordillera Mountain Range can be found here.

The province is populated by Igorots, particularly the ethnolinguistic groups of Ibaloi and Kankanaey. These indigenous tribes are known to be the best weavers and vegetable growers in the country. Igorots use ingenious irrigation systems in the form of rice terraces.

The Ibalois practice mummification, and preserve their dead by smoking the bodies for several months. The Ibalois have several hidden areas that serve as burial caves, such as the Timbac Cave and the Tinongchol Burial Rock.

To get an up-close look at perfectly preserved mummies, visit the Kabayan Mummies in Timbac Cave. An Ibaloi guide will lead you on a 4- to 6-hour hike on Mt. Timbac to the cave, where the mummies are protected by a locked gate. Your guide, after saying a prayer asking for permission, will get the cave’s caretaker to open the gate for mummy viewing.

Benguet is known to be the “Salad Bowl of the Philippines” for its high production of vegetables. Visitors can go strawberry picking in the province’s capital, La Trinidad, aptly named the Strawberry Capital of the Philippines.

The province is one of the country’s leading gold producers, an industry spearheaded by Benguet Corporation in 1903. Benguet Corporation, the first and oldest mining company in the Philippines, now mines gold and nickel across the country while remaining socially responsible.

There are plenty of mountains to climb while in Benguet. Hike on the third highest mountain in the Philippines, Mt. Pulag, which locals consider sacred area. The mountain is popular for the view of a “sea of clouds” and temperatures that drop to below zero degrees celsius. Hiking groups suggest allocating 2 to 3 days to get to the mountain and climb it, for catching the sunrise on the summit of Mt. Pulag is priceless.

Challenge yourself with Benguet’s Bakun Trio, a hiking trip across Mt. Tenglawan, Mt. Kabunian, and Mt. Lobo.

Mt. Tenglawan, which has the longest trail and is the most difficult to climb of the Bakun Trio, is the most popular. Climbing to the top of Mt. Lobo requires a shorter hike through thick forests. The trek to the summit of Mt. Kabunian, named after the Igorot god, includes crossing a narrow rope bridge and gushing waterfalls. Tackling the Bakun Trio will take you about 3 days, with each night spent camping in the mountains.

Located in the province of Benguet but under different legislation is the city of Baguio. Baguio, named the Summer Capital of the Philippines, is a popular tourist destination for its cool climate and accessibility.

Near Baguio City is the town of Tuba. Hiking newbies and beginners will have no trouble reaching the peak of Mt. Cabuyao, which is 2 hours from the jumpoff point. The mountain is where you’ll find the Cabuyao Burial Cave and a radar station from the American occupation.

Take a break from the cold mountain climate by dipping into a hot spring in the towns of Itogon and Tuba. Destinations like Asin Hot and Sulfur Springs and Balding Hot Springs are perfect for tired bones, and claim to cure skin ailments and arthritis.

Benguet is home to man-made wonders like the Ambuklao Dam, located in the town of Bokod. The dam provides hydroelectric power to parts of Luzon and also irrigates fields in Pangasinan.
