A town once abundant in bamboo or “bokawe,” Bocaue is a municipality in the province of Bulacan and is home to several historical sites and adorned with rich cultural foundations. The town has two art and history museums, commemorative shrines, a historical church, and two of the largest structures in the Philippines.
The St. Martin de Tours Church or the Diocesan Shrine of Bocaue is one of the oldest churches in Bulacan. Inside, the Beloved Holy Cross of Wawa or locally called, Mahal na Krus sa Wawa is kept safe. Many of the town’s devotees believe that the cross is miraculous. Every first Sunday of July, the people of Bocaue celebrates the much anticipated river festival in honor of the Holy Cross of Wawa.
In the heart of the town, you can find their town museum which houses several artifacts from the municipality’s history and not too far away, is an art gallery called, Twenty-Twenty. The gallery displays paintings and other art pieces.
Also erected in the town is a shrine of Francisca Reyes Aquino who is known globally for her contribution to dance. She hails from the town and the government wanted to commemorate her achievements. Aside from that, other structures found in the town is the Philippine Stadium and adjacent to that, the Philippine Arena.
The stadium is the largest in the Philippines and the arena is the biggest indoor arena in the world, as of its completion in 2014. Many events take place in these two facilities. The arena held concerts for international artists like Madonna.
Bocaue is not only a town of attractions, it is also a town of food. A few of Bocaue’s specialties include liempo (pork belly), crispy pata (pig knuckles), sinuso (pork breast), chicharon (pork cracklings), rellenong bangus (stuffed milkfish), and various rice cakes. Also, the tailors of the town are popular for their exquisite and meticulous designs for the traditional Filipino attire, the Barong Tagalog and the Filipiniana.
Bocaue, however small, still has a great deal of exciting events and activities to show for.
