Bohol

Bohol

Home to the world famous Chocolate Hills, Bohol is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Visayas. The province is full of wonderful beaches, exotic wildlife as well as a number of historical places.

All flights to Bohol land in the capital city of Tagbilaran. The city is known for being the site of the first peace treaty between the Spanish colonizers and the local chief. A monument can be found here commemorating the event.

Head to the south of the city and you’ll find Panglao, an island known for its white sand beaches. Soak up some sun either at the Alona, Dumaluan or Doljo beaches and you might be lucky enough to see a few dolphins or maybe even a whale.

History buffs will be pleased to know that Bohol is home to some of the early Catholic churches in the Philippines. The Baclayon Church is the oldest Christian settlement in Bohol, founded by the Jesuits in 1596. The area around the church is also filled with Spanish ancestral houses. Visit Loboc to see the famous church there too.

In fact, since you’re in Loboc, make sure to try out the famous Loboc River cruise. While you’re slowly drifting down the river, you’ll be treated to a buffet of traditional Filipino cuisine as well as traditional Filipino music.

For those looking for an adrenaline rush, visit Danao Adventure Park. The park features activities like kayaking, rappelling, and root climbing. But if you really want to get your adrenaline pumping, check out the Plunge. You free fall around 45 ft (14 m) before you’re swung back and forth like, well, a swing.

If you have the time, make sure to drop by the town of Corella to see tarsiers, a small primate that can only be found in Southeast Asia. While you can easily find captive tarsiers anywhere in Bohol, the ones in Corella are those in their native habitat. Try not to get freaked out by their wide-eyed appearance, as they’re actually quite friendly creatures.

Of course, you can’t leave Bohol without seeing the Chocolate Hills. Located in the town of Carmen and famous for their brown color during the dry months between December to May, the best way to see the more than 1,200 hills is by getting to the top of the Chocolate Hills Complex, a government-run resort and restaurant.
