Boljoon

Step back in time and visit this Cebu town where the past meets head on with the present.

Often referred to as the “Heritage Frontier of Cebu,” Boljoon has a rich historical heritage diligently preserved by the locals and the government.

Start your journey by heading to the Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio de Maria Church. More commonly known as the Boljoon Church, it is the oldest remaining church which still makes use of its original stone structure in Cebu and has been declared both as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines and a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

The Boljoon Church is most popular for being the archaeological site of 73 burials that were excavated from 2007 to 2011 along with some Chinese ceramics and Japanese porcelain wares dating back to 1529-1619 AD. Many of these artifacts are on display at the museum found in the parish grounds.

It is also where you can find the Escuela Catolica, a symmetrical structure that used to house children receiving required teachings on the Catholic faith prior to taking their first holy communion.

Boljoon is home to many watchtowers that were an essential part of a Spanish colonial society. The El Grande Baluarte, known today as the Kampana, is the largest watchtower in all of Cebu. Other watchtowers are the Baluarte sa Fuerte and the watchtower sitting atop Ili Rock, another popular tourist destination in town.

Boljoon is also popular for its many ancestral houses built during the Spanish and American periods. Balay Cirilo Sestoso is the oldest existing ancestral house in Boljoon and dates back to the 18th century. The Dr. Dionisio Niere House, built in the 1930s, was the former headquarters of a guerilla army. Another ancestral house to visit in the area is the Josefina Estavilla House.

You can opt to join the Boljoon Heritage Walk if you don’t want to make your own itinerary. The stops of the tour include the Boljoon Church, two ancestral houses, and a watchtower.

If going down memory lane is not your thing, spend the day underwater at Arbor, one of the marine sanctuaries of Cebu and a favorite among divers. Cebu Club Fort Med offers a whale shark encounter tour package for those who wish to see them up close.
