Borongan

A favorite destination of surfers and skim boarding enthusiasts, the city of Borongan is one of the ecotourism locations that the Philippines can be proud of. The capital city of the province of Eastern Samar teems with natural tourist spots that will force you to spend long periods of time walking and trekking — but these are worth every minute and every drop of sweat.

The Borongan Bay Boulevard is a popular surfing spot and is one of the first ones in Visayas. Beginner surfers should try the Sulangan Beach and the Guintagican Beach while the waters of Barangay Lalawigan are for those who are more experienced in the sport. Take a break from the sand and water and satisfy your hunger with the many grilled food that can be bought and eaten in the area.

Island hopping is a favorite activity of tourists in Borongan. Head to Monbon Island and spend the day snorkeling or relaxing by the shores of its beach. The white sand of the beaches in Ando Island is a welcome getaway for those who prefer uncrowded spots; its waves are also ideal for surfers. There’s also Isla Divinubo, which offers its visitors a lighthouse and a number of rock formations and caves to explore along with its thriving marine life and cool natural pools. Snorkeling, scuba diving, and boating are just some of the activities that can be enjoyed in this island.

Spelunkers will have a field day exploring the Talubagnan Cave. While it takes around 30-45 minutes to trek to its location and requires tourists to climb towering rock formations to get inside the actual cave, the natural pool and small waterfall waiting inside are more than enough rewards for the tiring exercise.

An hour’s worth of trekking can also bring you to the multi-tiered Pahungaw Falls that boast of having a natural pool you can swim in in each of its layers.

All these physical outdoor activities will surely make you hungry so don’t forget to try the salakura, a pancake that is made from glutinous rice, sugar, and coconut, and the lechon de Borongan, the town’s take on the classic popular roasted suckling pig.
