Cabanatuan

One of the first things you’ll notice in Cabanatuan City are the countless tricycles roaming its busy streets. Home to thousands of tricycles, this former capital of Nueva Ecija prides itself as the “Tricycle Capital of the Philippines.” You’re sure to find these speedy three-wheelers in handy while retracing the paths of Philippine heroes who once roamed this bustling city’s streets.

Catch a glimpse of Cabanatuan City’s glorious past by visiting the elegant Old Provincial Capitol building, which served as the center of Nueva Ecija’s government back when the city used to be its capital. Today, the city’s local government is housed within the Cabanatuan City Hall, where you’ll find a monument of the Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

From City Hall, you can take a short ride to the Cabanatuan Cathedral, the official seat of the Diocese of Cabanatuan. Right beside the church, you’ll find a marker signifying the historic death place of the Philippine hero, Gen. Antonio Luna.

Aside from being the younger brother of famous painter Juan Luna, Gen. Luna was also the founder of the first Philippine military academy, a general in the Philippine-American war, and a writer for La Solidaridad. A statue of Gen. Luna is also erected in Plaza Lucero, located just across the cathedral.

Get to know more of the country’s bravest heroes by visiting Camp Pangatian, one of the city’s most significant historical landmarks. Its centerpiece, the Pangatian War Memorial, immortalizes the daring and successful attempt of Filipino guerrillas and American soldiers to rescue 516 prisoners from the camp, which became a concentration camp during the Japanese occupation.

On your way to the memorial marker, you’ll also be treated to a scenic walk along a peaceful dirt path lined with lush green cypress trees. Travelers will also enjoy strolling along the nearby mango orchard, which leads to yet another Pangatian memorial site built by the provincial government.

If you’re looking for a serene retreat that’s closer to the city center, head to the Freedom Park just across the Old Capitol. Once you reach the park, you can relax in the company of nature, snack on local treats from nearby street vendors, and check out the larger Gen. Antonio Luna monument housed within the park.

Of course, you can also expect this key city of the “Rice Bowl of the Philippines” to have its fair share of verdant rice fields. Once you’ve experienced the city’s urban side, indulge in a tranquil escape to the peaceful barangay of Buliran. Here, travelers can witness the sun set against stunning rice fields and enjoy a refreshing dip in Buliran Brook.

Complete your Cabanatuan City experience by sampling authentic Nueva Ecija cuisine at Hapag Vicentico’s, the famous “Hapag Kainan ng bawat Novo Ecijano.” End your meal on a sweet note by buying some homegrown ice cream from Puno’s Ice Cream or sampling the well-loved pastries and cakes at Edna’s Cakeland.

Don’t forget to buy some tasty souvenirs from Edna’s Cakeland and Shing Fong Bakery, the oldest bakery in Cabanatuan City. Another ultimate local pasalubong travelers shouldn’t miss is the uniquely sweet Batutay Longganisa (local sausage).

So the next time you find yourself in Nueva Ecija, make sure to stop by its glorious former capital, Cabanatuan City. Aside from its famous tricycles, you’re sure to find plenty of other interesting sights in this thriving haven of historical significance and unspoiled natural beauty.
