Cagayan de Oro

On the northern border of Mindanao sits the province of Misamis Oriental. Its capital city is Cagayan de Oro, which roughly translates to “River of Gold.” This city, known as the Gateway to Northern Mindanao because of its accessibility, is the perfect destination for both adventure-seekers and vacationers looking to buff up their history knowledge.

The grounds that make up Cagayan de Oro City (CDO for short) have been inhabited by people since 350 AD. It has evolved to an energetic university town full of students and exciting experiences. You’ll never feel alone in the “City of Golden Friendship,” for Cagayan de Oro is home to friendly and happy-go-lucky people.

Flights from Manila to Cagayan de Oro are about an hour and a half long. The people of Cagayan de Oro, called Kagayanons, speak Visayan. They are also well-versed in English so getting around the city shouldn’t be a problem for foreigners.

Find your inner strength by going whitewater rafting in the coursing rapids of Cagayan de Oro, which guides say that even US Marines can’t handle. Thrill-seekers will enjoy a visit to the Mapawa Nature Park, where you can go river trekking, enjoy scenic views on horseback, and rappel down cliffs.

Adventure awaits in the Macahambus Adventure Park, encompassed by barangays Lumbia and Bayanga. Near the park is the Macahambus Cave. In the 1900’s, a battle between Filipinos and Americans ensued on the hill, and the Filipinos emerged victorious.

The park features a Sky Bridge, which is 120 meters (394 ft) long and hangs between a gorge at 37 meters (120 ft). Visitors can either cross the hanging rope bridge, which shakes with every step, or choose to be exhilarated and zipline across the gap.

Make new friends or party with old ones at Cagayan de Oro’s Higalaay (Visayan for “Friendship”) or Kagay-an Festival. Street dance parties laden with locals in brightly colored costumes are held every 28th of August in honor of the city’s patron saint, St. Augustine.

One historical landmark to see in Cagayan de Oro is the MacArthur Marker in the Macabalan Port. The captain’s hat-shaped gazebo commemorates General Douglas MacArthur’s arrival to Cagayan de Oro in 1942.

In downtown Cagayan de Oro lies the Golden Friendship Park. It is also called Plaza Divisoria, which in Spanish means “divide.” The park is built on the town’s dividers, which were constructed after a fire ravaged the city.

In the park stands memorials to heroes and famous figures like Andres Bonifacio, Jose Rizal, President Ramon Magsaysay, and Justiniano R. Borja, the city’s former mayor. A monument was also constructed in honor of the Kagayanon soldiers who died while fighting in the Philippine-American war.

Visitors can learn more about Cagayan de Oro’s rich history and culture in Museo de Oro in Xavier University and the Museum of Three Cultures in Capitol University. Take a trip to the San Agustin Cathedral, where a wooden cross (the only remnant from the original church built in 1845) stands.

Enjoy breathtaking views of Macajalar Bay and the neighboring Camiguin Island at the Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village. This resort sits on the slopes of Malasag Hill, and is great place to go for a swim or take a walk through forests of teak trees.

When in CDO, be sure to grab a mug of sikwati (hot chocolate) that goes best with putomaya (rice cake made with coconut milk).
