Calbayog

Calbayog, Samar is the third most populated city in Eastern Visayas. It is also home to dozens of natural attractions, as well as nature parks for everyone to enjoy. Adventure-seekers and backpackers would never run out of things to do in this city — from swimming, mountain climbing, to even scuba-diving and trekking!

Also known as the City of Waterfalls, Calbayog brings you beautiful natural waterfalls that decorate the city. A few of these are, Bangon-Bugtong Falls, which is not only an attraction but a source of power for the city and its neighboring municipalities, Tabokno Falls, Pan-as Falls, and Lulugayan Falls. Lastly, there’s Ton-ok Falls, which is especially endearing for adrenaline junkies and explorers alike. Before having to see this wonder, you have to hike for at least half an hour to get to it. It’s hidden by forest vegetation — Mother Nature made sure to conceal its beauty.

Other than waterfalls, caves are also main attractions in the city. Guinogo-an Cave and Bolongto Cave are two of the beginner-friendly caves. But if you wish to go on an adventure, Tinago-an Cave, which in Cebuano means “hiding place” is composed of dark tunnels, ideal for people who are more daring than others. There’s also the Danao Cave, with seven chambers inhabited by snakes, bats, and other creatures. It is often used as an initiation venue for people who want to earn a talisman.

For interested divers, the city offers an islet separated from the mainland called Binaliw. It has a deep diving spot and with the proper gear, you can see the various species of coral, several kinds of shells, and plenty of marine life.

But, fear not, for people who want to just relax and take a break from all the stress, Calbayog has places for that, too! Mapaso Hot Spring is just a fifteen minute hike from Calbayog’s Barangay Rizal. Mapaso, literally means “can be burned due to the heat.” While soaking in the spring, you might see some pokot swimming around. These are freshwater crustaceans that become naturally pinkish because of the high temperature.

Calbayog also has beaches with clear waters and grayish sand that are great for picnics and bumming around. Malajog Beach and Naga Beach are both lined with swaying palm trees and dotted with cottages for visitors to use. Visited by VIPs and diplomats alike, these beaches are a must-visit for beach bums! Aside from these two, a white-sand beauty awaits in the outskirts of the city called Bagacay Beach. Adorned with coconut trees and the fresh sea breeze, it is a strip of land with a scenic view of the other islands, as well as the town.

Calbayog City is Samar’s very own hideaway for both adventurers and beach-bummers! The city welcomes all who want to discover all of its hidden treasures.
