Catarman is the largest town and capital of the Northern Samar province. It is at the Northern part of Samar, facing the Philippine Sea. Its topography is like the rest of Samar Island: rugged, mountainous and dissected with several water formations. This is probably why it was named as such; Catarman is thought to be derived from the Waray word for “jagged”.
The airport (Catarman National Airport) is located here, so a direct flight from Manila would take you straight to the heart of Northern Samar. Locals, however, tend to use tricycles and pedicabs for transportation within the town.
Like the rest of the province, Catarman has also been blessed with the kind of beaches the Philippines is well-known for — beaches boasting of crystalline waters and powder-white sand. A notable beach in the area would be the Catarman White Beach, which has mangroves, islets and an air of being unspoilt by civilization.
Some good resort accommodations in the area would be La Fortunata Functions, Pineil’s Farm and Resort, Alexander Beach Resort, White Beach Resort, Somoray Park and Resort, Villa Alabado Beach Resort and Lodging, and Binang and Cadio Resort.
Northern Samar’s beaches are definitely not limited to Catarman. There are other places to go for sun and sand, such as Biri Island, Onay Beach in Laoang, as well as other islands like San Antonio, Dalupiri, and Spice of Life. There are also resorts in the municipality of Allen such as Felixville Resort, Wayang-Wayang Beach Resort, and Paradise Beach.
