Coron

Coron

Located at the northernmost tip of Palawan, Coron is heaven for all the ocean lovers out there. You don’t need to find Nemo around these parts; you can go snorkeling anywhere in the area and you’ll be sure to catch a glimpse of the Philippines’ unique marine life.

Kayangan Lake is arguably Coron’s most photographed location. The cleanest lake in the Philippines by far, it requires a steep hike of 300 steps and an entrance fee of ₱200 (US$5). Once you reach the top though, you’ll be welcomed by a spectacular view of clear turquoise waters surrounded by rock formations.

The water here is clear enough that you can see numerous schools of fish swimming alongside you as well as the limestone formations below. But be careful as the water is extremely deep, so make sure to wear a life jacket if you’re not a good swimmer.

If having to climb 300 steps put you off to visiting Kayangan, there’s Barracuda Lake nearby. Barracuda is a thermocline lake, meaning you can feel changes in the water’s temperature as you dive down. The lake is small though and tends to get crowded during the peak seasons of October to April.

The Twin Lagoons are another must-see in the area and like Barracuda, they’re also thermocline. There are actual two lagoons here, with the first one being a docking area for the boats and the second one being a little more hidden. There’s usually a balsa (bamboo raft) here so feel free to use it to get around the second lagoon.

There are plenty of places to snorkel around Coron but if you want to see something unique, head out to the Skeleton Wreck, which contains a few sunken ships from World War II. The place is great for beginner divers as the water is more on the shallow side. You can also feed the fish in the area while you’re here.

Most tours on the island will end with a picnic of freshly caught seafood on Banol Beach. The beach is also beautiful place to catch the sunset.

You can easily see what Coron has to offer in one day, but the best way to experience the island is not by rushing through all the sights. Take some time to soak in the sun and to swim with the fish. But it’s always easy to come back, as it’s only a 40-minute flight from Manila.

Oh, and make sure to bring an underwater camera.
