Cotabato

Cotabato

Known as Mindanao’s “food basket,” Cotabato province is the top producer of cereals, tropical fruits, freshwater fish, livestock, sugarcane, vegetables, and coconut. Also formerly known as “North Cotabato,” now only Cotabato, this province is composed of 17 municipalities and one city.

Cotabato is also home to the great Mt. Apo, the Pulangi River which is a huge contributor to Mindanao’s irrigation system, and the Liguasan Marsh which contributes to a big number of freshwater fish and a possible source of natural gas.

Fun fact, Cotabato was derived from the term Kota Batu which means “stone fort,” referring to the stone fort that Sultan Muhammad Kudarat sat in, which is now Cotabato City.
