Dagupan

Colorful festivities, artistic masterpieces, and a thriving bangus (milkfish) industry are just some of the things that make Dagupan City a feast for the eyes and the palate. Countless experiences await those who journey to this lively and historic city, which prides itself as the “Bangus Capital of the Philippines.”

One of the best times to experience Dagupan City is during its renowned Bangus Festival, an annual celebration of the city’s thriving bangus industry. Hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists flock to Dagupan City each year to participate in this colorful and extravagant fiesta.

Journey to Dagupan City during the festival and you’ll be greeted by plenty of exciting activities, including a month-long trade fair, cooking exhibitions, outdoor concerts, and a lively street dance performance depicting the harvesting of bangus. Guests can party outdoors from dusk till dawn and feast on the tens of thousands of pure Dagupan bangus being grilled throughout the night.

And if you still can’t get enough of that bangus fever, check out the Magsaysay Fish Market for some freshly-harvested bangus or visit the fishing village of Bonuan to see how and where the iconic fish of Dagupan City is harvested.

You can also try out the Dawel River Cruise, which takes guests on a scenic boat ride around the Dawel River. The river tour begins at a wharf underneath the Dawel Bridge, where you’ll be greeted by huge and colorful bangus sculptures painted by local artists. During the 45-minute tour, participants will be treated to a stunning view of the river and surrounding mangrove trees.

Dagupan City may be an urban hub nowadays, but travelers can still find plenty of testaments to the city’s earlier years hidden along its busy streets. One of the most majestic sights in the entire city is the Spanish-era Old Dagupan Cathedral, which showcases the city’s rich heritage through its weathered concrete walls and grand colonial architecture.

Go on a walking tour of Dagupan City and you’ll find plenty of historical sites like the Dagupan City Hall’s 130-year-old water tower and the Gabaldon Building, which served as the temporary residence of American Gen. Douglas MacArthur during World War II.

You can also drop by the Dagupan City Plaza to see one of the oldest locomotives to traverse the Ferrocarril de Manila – Dagupan, a 195-kilometer railroad track used during the 1800s.

Visitors can learn more about the city’s history by visiting the Museo na Dagupan, which houses old photographs, artifacts, and antique items previously owned by prominent Dagupeño clans. The museum’s Edades Hall also houses artworks by the famous national artist, Victorio Edades, who grew up in Dagupan City.

After touring the city, end your day by relaxing along the picturesque shores of Tondaligan Beach and Bonuan Blue Beach. Guests can lounge in beach huts or go for a refreshing swim in the sea.

Hungry adventurers will find plenty of traditional Dagupeño delicacies to sample aside from the city’s famous bangus. Try out Dagupan City’s famous pigar-pigar (deep fried carabeef with vegetables) and kaleskes (soup with beef innards) at the Pigar-Pigar Restaurant or feast on a wide variety of Dagupeño classics at the iconic Dagupeña Restaurant.

You can also wind down with some coffee and desserts at cozy local coffee shops like the Yellow Tree Café. And when it comes to souvenirs, you can’t go wrong with dried fish products from the market or the freshly baked pastries of local favorites like Pedrito’s and Jam Sweet Jam.

Travelers definitely won’t run out of things to see and do around Dagupan City. Bangus may be this vibrant city’s undisputed star, but its rich heritage, artistic attractions, and friendly locals all make the journey even more worthwhile.
