Davao del Sur

Known as the “Baguio City of the South,” Davao del Sur in Mindanao is an ideal destination for adventure seekers all year round because of its relatively cool climate.

The province is home to Mount Apo. Standing at 9,692 ft (2,954 m) above sea level, the mountain is the highest peak in the country, making it the greatest test of skills for mountain climbers. There are three major trails to try out here, with Kidapawan being the easiest.

At the foot of Mount Apo are several hot springs where tired hikers can stretch out their sore muscles. There’s the Agco Hot Springs in Kidapawan and Mainit Hot Springs in Kapatagan.

Also found in Kapatagan are the Virgin Falls. Although it requires an hour of hiking, the view more than makes up for it.

The towering Tudaya Falls is another sight to behold. The tallest waterfalls in Davao del Sur, Tudaya can be found in the middle of a lush green forest in Barangay Sibulan.

Non-mountain climbers can try their hand out at ziplining at Camp Sabros. The zip line goes from 920 ft (280 m) to 1,300 ft (400 m) and gives you a fantastic backdrop of Mount Apo, perfect for pictures. But if you’re afraid of heights, there’s whitewater tubing at Sibulan River.

For the beach bums out there, Davao del Sur has Passig Islet. Essentially just a small stretch of white sand, the beach is the ideal place to soak up some sun and forget all your worries for the day. There are no restaurants here though, so make sure to bring your own food.

If you’re looking for more of a cultural experience, there’s the Tibolo Village at the foot of Mount Apo. It’s home to the Bagobo people and visitors are always welcome. Here you can learn how to make traditional crafts as well as chow down on some traditional Bagobo food.

Coffee enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Davao del Sur home to the world’s most expensive coffee beans. Made out of the coffee beans found in the droppings of the civet cat, civet coffee is known for its sweet chocolatey flavor. While civet coffee runs from US$30 to 80 a cup elsewhere in the world, a cup of the stuff here will cost you around ₱300 (US$7).

Davao del Sur has a lot to offer, whether you’re looking for a mountain to conquer or just want to try out something new and different. With its fantastic views of waterfalls and lush greenery, Davao del Sur is a destination not to be missed.
