Dinagat Islands

This province is comprised of a group of islands to the south of Leyte Gulf. It is part of the Caraga Administrative Region in Mindanao. The island is mainly known for its several beaches, although it remains underexplored by tourists.

Dinagat’s name comes from a love story between a princess (Dina) and a prince (Gat) from opposing tribes, who attempted to elope, but lost their lives doing so. Eventually they noticed natural formations that resembled a man and a woman, and concluded that these were manifestations of the doomed couple.

There are a number of interesting things you can see in Dinagat, that you won’t see anywhere else. The first thing you will see upon reaching this province by boat is the facade of a castle. Locally known as the White Castle or Islander’s Castle, the building is actually the residence of the most prominent family in Dinagat. You may still take photos in front of the place, though.

The building of the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA) has a similar look — most likely because the same influential family had put it up. It is marked by a crown atop the building. You can marvel at the unique architecture of these buildings in Dinagat.

The island also has interesting ecotourism spots. A natural bonsai forest is located at the fringes of Mt. Redondo in the Municipality of Loreto. There is also a bat sanctuary in Tubajon.

Rock formations abound in the island, such as the Kisses Islets of Libjo, and the Lalaking Bukid at the Basilisa Islands — the latter of which is considered to be the sleeping form of the legendary Gat.

There are many beaches to visit in Dinagat, such as the Bitaog and Kabakongan beaches at the Basilisa Islands, the Pangabangan Island, and Sundayo Beach. For those who aren’t fans of sand getting everywhere, you can check out other water formations like Lake Bababu, Esperanza Spring and Ouano Lagoon.

Evidence of its rich mineral deposits can be seen at the Pulang Yuta (Red Soil) in Barangay Cuarinta — true to its name, the soil looks like it is part of a Martian landscape.
