Dumaguete

The city of Dumaguete, located in the Negros Oriental province in Central Visayas, is a vibrant college town that’s also known as “The City of Gentle People.” The scenic bay, historical landmarks, universities, and museums make Dumaguete City a hub of culture, art, and education.

Before making Dumaguete City your jump-off point to the countless natural wonders in and around Negros Oriental, take a day to see the sights in the city.

The Silliman University, established in 1901, is famous for being the oldest American-founded university in Asia. In it, you’ll find Silliman Anthropological Museum, where you can view thousand-year old artifacts and an extensive look at Philippine indigenous history and culture.

Soak in some sun in the nearby Silliman Beach, which is frequented by young locals for picnics on the beach or just a walk on the shore’s yellow sand.

Take a walk on the beachfront promenade of Rizal Boulevard, which stretches for about 780 meters (2559 feet). Along it is the city’s commercial district, making this boulevard perfect for sunset-watching by the bay and dining or drinking with friends. When night falls, the boulevard becomes a food market where you can feast on freshly caught and cooked seafood and barbecued meats.

Visit the St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral, known to locals as Dumaguete Cathedral. Aside from groups of churchgoers hearing Mass on Sundays, crowds gather to the cathedral to see its grand ceilings and intricate chandeliers.

Right next to the Dumaguete Cathedral is the Dumaguete Belfry, which was built in 1811. The coral-stone bell tower is the oldest of its kind in the province, and served as a watchtower before becoming one of the most popular pieces of history in the city.

Join in on the celebration during the Sandurot Festival, held every November. The term “sandurot” refers to the Visayan word for “intimate.” The festival celebrates the hospitality of the Dumaguete people and the unity of the city, which is a melting pot of races, religions, and cultures.

Spread the Christmas joy and cheer in Dumaguete City by visiting the glittering Christmas House, owned by anaesthesiologist Dr. Rico Absin. Planning and preparation for the Christmas decoration and displays begin in January, and result in bright lights, loud music, and a lavish feast for the whole city. The house also features Dr. Absin’s collection of antiques and religious statues, which guests can view free of charge.

Drop by the Sidlakang Negros Village, a cultural-expo-center that features products and handcrafted goods from all the different cities and towns in the province. The village comes alive during the Buglasan Festival, held every October.
