Iloilo City

Iloilo City

Iloilo City is said to be home to the country’s sweetest and most loving Filipinos, the Ilonggos. Maybe that’s why it’s been called the “City of Love,” or maybe it’s also because of the city’s romantic sceneries, breathtaking churches, colorful Dinagyang festivals, and comforting cuisine. Whatever the reason, there really is a lot to fall in love with when one pays a visit to this jewel in Visayas.

Named after ilong-ilong, or “nose like,” after the shape of the land where it lies, Iloilo City was the country’s last Spanish-colonial capital when Manila surrendered to the United States. Even until today, countless remnants of the city’s colonial past still stand proudly among the city’s thriving modern structures.

Going church-hopping is an essential part of any trip to Iloilo City. The place is home to several historical churches that date back to the Spanish colonial era. Start with the majestic Miag-ao Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its intricately carved facade.

Another noteworthy church is the Sto. Niño de Arevalo Parish, which houses one of the country’s three original Sto. Niño images. You can also visit the Iglesia de San José de Placer (Church of San Jose), the Gothic-style St. Anne Parish Church, and the Jaro Cathedral, where Western Visayas’ Patroness, the Lady of Candles, is enshrined.

Discover more about Iloilo’s history by strolling down Calle Real, Iloilo’s heritage street. Declared a cultural heritage site in 2014, the street is home to several buildings built during the Commonwealth Era in the 1930’s and 40’s. Visitors can also view Museo de Iloilo’s vast collection of traditional pottery, jewelry, statues, fossils, and other cultural artifacts recovered from Panay and Iloilo.

Once you’ve had your fill of history, head on over to the lively Smallville Complex for a taste of Iloilo City’s modern nightlife. Locals and visitors alike know that Smallville is the ultimate place to be for dining, entertainment, and non-stop partying.

Visitors can have a drink or two in one of Smallville Complex’s bars, sing their hearts out in Karaoke TV joints like Smallville21 and MO2 Annex, or party in nightclubs like Aura, Flow, and MO2 Ice. The complex also offers a wide array of coffee shops and restaurants for guests who simply want to relax and unwind.

Of course, no trip to Iloilo City would be complete without sampling some of its famed authentic cuisine. Some of Iloilo City’s most famous offerings are pancit molo (dumpling soup), Roberto’s Queen Siopao in Calle Real, and La Paz Market’s famous warm batchoy (pork noodle soup).

Complete your visit by having a cup of native coffee at Madge’s Coffee or trying Iloilo’s thickest and most indulgent hot tsokolate (native chocolate) at Camiña Bahay na Bato. Don’t forget to buy some of Iloilo City’s popular delicacies like pinasugbo (caramelized sugar-coated banana slices) on your way out as well for a perfectly sweet ending to your “City of Love” experience.
