Isabela

Isabela province is every adventurer’s paradise. This “Queen Province of the Philippines” is a land filled with lush forests, magnificent mountain ranges, pristine beaches, and other breathtaking natural wonders just waiting to be explored. Journey to this explorer’s playground and you’ll be surprised by the countless hidden treasures it has to offer.

Believe it or not, Isabela is where you’ll find the world’s largest butaka (chair with long arm rests), which measures over 11 feet high, 20 feet long, and 9 feet wide. The province is also home to the majestic Magat Dam, the biggest hydroelectric dam in Southeast Asia. You can marvel at the far-ranging dam and Magat River from the dam’s viewing deck.

Get to know the rich heritage of Isabela by touring its historic colonial churches, starting with the oldest one in the province, the San Pablo Church. Built in the 1700s, this church has the tallest bell tower in the Cagayan Valley region. Its architectural design was modeled after the churches of Vatican City.

You can also visit the Tumauini Church, a Baroque-style brick church that was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum. Continue your tour of Isabela’s centuries-old religious landmarks by checking out Gamu Church, Cauayan Church, and Alicia Church.

Step out of your comfort zone and head to the remote coastal town of Divilacan for a uniquely rewarding Isabela travel experience. Riding a motorcycle is the best way to reach this town, since you’ll have to pass through rough roads and cross a narrow wooden bridge to get there.

Once you reach Divilacan, pass by the scenic Diacatan Mangrove Forest and the Diacatan Lake, a crocodile sanctuary where the Mabuwaya Organization releases young crocodiles. You can also meet the Dumagat, one of the country’s oldest indigenous groups, by visiting the neighboring town of Maconacon and their settlement near the Blos River (Dicatayan River).

Off the coast of Divilacan lies yet another hidden gem called Honeymoon Island. As the name suggests, this island of white sand beaches and crystalline waters is perfect for those seeking a quiet, romantic paradise.

One beach you might not want to miss is Dicotcotan Beach, a stunning, three-kilometer stretch of white sand bordered by a lush coastal forest. Those who dive into its azure waters will be greeted by coral reefs, seagrass beds, and various species of fish. You can also check out the equally alluring Didadungan Beach, another stretch of fine white sand facing the Pacific Ocean.

If beaches aren’t exactly your thing, try exploring the deep rainforests and lush mountains of the Northern Sierra Madre National Park. You’ll find various plant and wildlife species in this thriving region, which happens to be the largest and most diverse protected natural area in the country.

Adventurers will also enjoy trekking to the towering cascades of Dibulo Falls or trying the exciting activities of the Isabela Sanctuary in Fuyot Springs National Park. Travelers can ride the sanctuary’s 350-meter zipline or venture into the Sta. Victoria Caves. These limestone caves are popular among tourists because of their unusual rock formations and subterranean waterfalls.

Don’t forget to sample some authentic Pancit Cabagan during your stay. You’ll find several restaurants in Cabagan that specialize in making this delicacy, like Aling Kikay’s, Josie’s Panciteria, and Felecita’s Pancit Cabagan.

You can also feast on the province’s abundant seafood offerings like buteng (shellfish), tilapia, and pocopo (rock lobsters). Make sure to pass by a market or souvenir shop too for some muriecos, binallay, and other sweet glutinous rice delicacies to bring back home from your trip.
