Laguna

Located just a few hours away from Metro Manila, Laguna is a favorite destination when it comes to weekend getaways and spontaneous road trips. Formerly known as La Laguna, or “the lake,” the province’s accessibility and idyllic natural charm have made it one of the go-to vacation spots for urban dwellers who wish to reconnect with nature and enjoy some peace away from the city.

While the winding road to Laguna that runs along Sierra Madre mountain range is already quite a sight to behold, the province itself is home to plenty of breathtaking natural wonders as well. Travelers can immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of the province’s numerous water bodies, including San Pablo’s famous seven lakes, Los Baños’ Crocodile Lake, and Laguna de Bay, the Philippines’ largest lake.

On the other hand, the more adventurous thrill-seekers can take a raft ride through the cascading waters of Pagsanjan Falls, try their hand at big game fishing in Lake Caliraya, or go trekking and camping at the mysterious Mt. Makiling – said to be shaped like the dormant volcano’s guardian spirit, Maria Makiling.

Many groups find themselves traveling to Laguna for its popular and family-friendly man-made attractions as well, including the massive theme park Enchanted Kingdom, urban shopping and leisure destination Nuvali, and the hot spring resorts and vacation houses in Los Baños.

Laguna is also well-known for being the birthplace of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal. His birthplace is immortalized by the Jose Rizal Shrine – a replica of the Rizal family’s ancestral Spanish colonial house built on the very same land as the original. Remnants of the Spanish era can still be found in the province’s old colonial churches, which religious devotees visit during Holy Week for the Visita Iglesia tradition.

Once you’ve finished sightseeing, make sure to set aside some time to discover Laguna’s famed delicacies and crafts. You’ll surely find the perfect souvenir among the many traditional crafts Laguna has to offer. Some of the most popular include the Barong Tagalog of Lumban, the pandan leaf mats and bags of Luisiana, and the taka (paper mache) and wood carving goods of Paete.

And if it’s food you’re looking for, you’ll find many signature traditional dishes in each of Laguna’s provinces like the “espasol” of Calamba, buko pie of Los Baños, “kinulob na itik” (deep fried duck) of Victoria, and the “kesong puti” (white cheese) of Sta. Cruz.
