Legazpi

If you want to enjoy a stunning view of the majestic Mayon Volcano, Legazpi City is the place to visit. Nicknamed the “Gateway to Bicol Region,” this capital city of Albay is a destination of many wonders, offering a fusion of natural and cultural experiences to every adventurous traveler.

It’s hard to miss the iconic, nearly-perfect cone of Mayon Volcano towering above the land once you hit Legazpi City. You can see Mayon Volcano from almost anywhere in Albay, but those feeling a little more daring can venture closer to the volcano by trekking along its rocky trails.

You’ll find one of the best-known views of Mayon Volcano at the site of the famous Cagsawa Ruins. Its centerpiece, a weathered stone belfry, is the last remnant of the Cagsawa Church, a Baroque-style church built by Spanish Franciscan friars in the 18th century.

Roam around Legazpi City and you’ll find several other historical churches like the San Gregorio Magno Cathedral and the St. Raphael Parish Church, which houses an altar made from a single block of hardened lava. You can also check out the nearby Daraga Church, which is said to be Albay’s crowning glory of religious architecture.

Get to know more about Legazpi City’s cultural heritage by visiting the Legazpi City Museum and Peñaranda Park. Located in the city’s Old Albay District, Peñaranda Park follows the traditional layout style of colonial Spanish plazas. The park is home to the historic Liberty Bell, which commemorates the country’s liberation from Japanese forces after World War II.

Sightseers and thrill-seekers will enjoy a visit to the popular Ligñon Hill Nature Park, which offers a panoramic view of Legazpi City, Daraga, Albay Gulf, and Mayon Volcano. Early risers can make their way up to Ligñon Hill before dawn to witness the golden sunrise above Albay Gulf.

If you choose to visit the park at night, you’ll be greeted by an equally breathtaking sea of sparkling city lights below the hill. Visitors can also try out exciting activities like paintball, rappelling, zipline rides, and a tour of the Japanese World War II tunnel at the foot of Ligñon Hill.

Those who enjoyed the view from Ligñon Hill should also visit Kapuntukan Hill, which sits just a few minutes away from the busy Legazpi port. A short hike up this “Sleeping Lion Hill,” as locals fondly call it, will reward visitors with yet another enchanting vista of Legazpi City and Albay Gulf.

Once you’re done exploring Legazpi’s natural and cultural landmarks, head to Embarcadero de Legazpi to experience the city’s thriving modern nightlife. If you prefer something more relaxed, you can take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque seaside road of Legazpi Boulevard.

Don’t forget to feast on local delicacies like laing (vegetables in spicy coconut milk), pinangat (fish in coconut milk), and Bicol express (pork in spicy coconut milk) during your visit. While the spiciness of the meals may come as a surprise to some, it definitely adds that signature Bicolano kick to these already delicious eats.
