Lipa

Lipa City is one of the three cities found in the province of Batangas. It is located near the center of Batangas, the Taal Lake. Lipa City is composed of 72 barangays, and is considered a highly urbanized area with its many schools, government offices, and shopping centers.

The 20,940 hectare (209.4 square kilometers) city is the home of the Fernando Air Base, where you’ll find the Philippine Air Force Air Education and Training Command. The air base is located on a plateau that overlooks the Taal Volcano, and won Philippine Air Force’s Model Base of the Year several times.

Despite the fact that there are no beaches to visit in Lipa City, there are still many resorts and farms you can stay in. The city is just 2 hours away from Metro Manila and is frequented by both Manileños and foreigners looking to get some R&R.

Go back-to-basics and kickstart your healthy lifestyle at The Farm at San Benito. Guests can enjoy massages, spa treatments, and yoga and meditation classes and retire in private villas and suites. You can also join fitness activities like circuit training, aqua aerobics, and plyometrics while being surrounded by lush gardens and shady trees.

The Farm serves organic vegan dishes made with freshly hand-picked ingredients from their backyard vegetable garden. The Farm occasionally holds cooking classes that incorporate recipes from their vegan cookbooks.

Another farm to visit is the Bluroze Farm and Wildlife Park. The roads leading to it are lined with lush greenery, a breath of fresh air from Lipa’s city scenery. Guests can rent private cottages or pitch tents on the park’s camping grounds. Rent a bicycle and ride to the Wildlife Park, which houses wide range of animals like ostriches, pythons, kalaw (Philippine hornbill), bear cats, peacocks, turkeys and sheep.

Grab a bowl of Batangas’ specialty dishes in Lipa City. Stomach-warming lomi (Filipino version of chicken noodle soup) and goto (rice porridge with ox tripe) are available in eateries and restaurants around the city. Cool off with a tall glass of halo-halo, the Filipino classic dessert of shaved ice, evaporated milk, sweet beans, and fruits, topped with ube (purple yam), leche flan (caramel custard), and ice cream.

In the Lipa Games and Amusement Center, visitors and locals can bet on sabong, the Filipino term for cockfights.

There are plenty of sights to see while visiting Lipa City. Visit the San Sebastian Cathedral, known to locals as Lipa Cathedral, which was constructed in 1894. This cathedral houses the only baroque pipe organ in Batangas and an intricately designed dome.

Head to one of the oldest houses in the city, Casa de Segunda. This ancestral home is named after Segunda Katigbak, and was lived in by her descendants, the Luz-Katigbak family. Segunda Katigbak is known as national hero Dr. Jose Rizal’s first love.

Other landmarks in Lipa City can be found in Barangay Lumbang. Pay respects at the Markers of the Burial Grounds, where Filipinos who died during the Japanese massacre of World War II are buried. In the same barangay is the Peace Tower, which was constructed in the former campsite of the Japanese soldiers. The Japanese government built the tower as a symbol of peace and unity between Japan and the Philippines.
