Maasin

Ferdinand Magellan, the great Portuguese explorer dropped by Canturing River for some water before heading over to Cebu. Upon drinking it, he and his men noticed that it wasn’t fresh! It was salty! Hence the name, “Maasin” was given to the town of Southern Leyte. Or so they say.

Maasin, the capital city of the province, is smaller compared to other cities in the Philippines with only 85,000 inhabitants but hey, it is abundant with historical, religious, and natural points of interest.

Devotees will have a field day in the city. The beautiful Maasin Cathedral was built in the 17th century and is the largest church in all of Maasin. Other than that, there’s the Lady of Assumption statue of the Virgin Mary atop the Jalleca Hills located 104 feet above sea level and can only be reached after climbing 300 steps. Carefully detailed and meticulously painted, the statue is a popular tourist destination.

The San Francisco Javier Pilgrims Center is said to be a miraculous place. It is situated in the outskirts of the city and pilgrims trek for an hour to reach the place because it is said that every written petition and spoken prayer is answered.

For all the art lovers out there, there’s the privately owned Abiera Museo d’Art, a small museum that houses different relics, paintings, preserved animals, coins, sculptures, and other artifacts. Though privately owned, the museum is open to all those who are interested in seeing the exhibits.

The fun doesn’t stop there! Like most places in the Philippines, this city is home to several natural attractions and destinations. Adventurers would have a marvelous time in Guinsohotan Cave because inside the it aren’t just rock formations, there are also bats and some waterfalls, creating a pool safe for swimming. The water that cascades from the cave spills into the Cagnitoan Lagoon, another popular place for locals and visitors.

Another privately owned business, the Bogo Bird Paradise is a destination for all avid nature lovers. It’s home to dozens of species of birds. It is located a couple of kilometers away from the city and is covered in lush greenery, only making it more ideal for the beautiful birds who call this home.

Finally, the Maasin Zoo and Adventure Park is also located in the city. What differentiates this zoo from all the other zoos is that the animals are separated by natural barricades and not by cages. This makes it even more of an adventurous experience without compromising the visitors’ safety.

Maasin is a great place to visit and it’s still underrated! Book your trip now!
