Mabalacat

Mabalacat City is one of the three official cities of Pampanga province, a well-known culinary and entertainment hotspot of Central Luzon. Its name, drawn from the balacat tree, means “full of balacat trees” in the Kapampangan dialect. According to folk tales, Mabalacat City’s first settlers were all negritos, or Aetas, who built their homes on the city’s balacat-filled lands.

One of the main entry points into Mabalacat City is the Clark International Airport, an international gateway that used to be a former U.S. Military air base. Once you’re in the city, you can check out the Mabalacat City Hall or the centuries-old Our Lady of Grace Parish Church, which was first established during the Spanish colonial era.

Another notable church is the Sanctuario de San Angelo, a Spanish-inspired church boasting stained glass windows by the famous Bicolano artist, Pancho Piano. The majestic church is housed within Xevera Mabalacat, a gated subdivision inspired by Spain’s classic architecture.

Aside from being a residential complex, Xevera Mabalacat also serves as a lifestyle hub, where guests can enjoy various amenities and leisure activities. Roam around the peaceful subdivision and you’ll find commercial centers, grand European-style fountains, a playground, and an amusement park. Here, kids can try out rides like the carousel, swing ride, and bumper cars.

More adventures await travelers at the Clark Freeport Zone, a popular business, leisure, and entertainment center that occupies a large section of Mabalacat City. Guests can take a cultural and historical tour of the Philippines at the Nayong Pilipino theme park or experience the dinosaur era by interacting with the life-size animatronic dinosaurs of Dinosaurs Island.

Nature lovers can also visit the Zoocobia Fun Zoo, a popular ecological destination in the forested hills of the Clark Freeport Zone. Try feeding animals from your very own hands through their “close animal encounters” attraction or navigate your way through the Garden Maze, which aims to educate its participants on the various plants found within the verdant labyrinth.

One attraction you shouldn’t miss is the zoo park’s famous Zooc ride, the Philippines’ first and only gravity car ride. Experience the thrilling pull of gravity as you ride this one-of-a-kind car down a 400-meter downward track. Other adrenaline pumping activities in Zoocobia include the Superman Zipline and the park’s all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and 4×4 rides.

Of course, parks aren’t the only natural attractions you’ll find in the city. Check out the Sacobia River and Hills or brave the long trek to Haduan Falls, a serene paradise tucked away within the dense forests of Mabalacat City. Golf enthusiasts might also enjoy a visit to the lush green gardens of the Marina Hills Golf and Country Club.

Discover the rich heritage of Mabalacat City by touring stunning ancestral homes like the Morales Ancestral House and the Ernesto dela Cruz Ancestral House. Travelers can also learn more about the country’s indigenous Aeta tribe by heading to Marcos Village, an authentic Aeta village where guests can observe the locals’ tribal rituals and customs.

Believe it or not, Mabalacat City was also the historical birthplace of the first Japanese Kamikaze, or “divine wind” pilots. In October 1944, Vice Admiral Takijiro Onishi decided to form a suicide offensive force that would crash the Japanese planes into enemy forces. Today, a Kamikaze Peace Memorial stands in the city as a reminder of how this grim event should never be repeated.

Don’t forget to sample some authentic Kapampangan delicacies while you’re in the city. The entire province of Pampanga is known as the “culinary capital of the Philippines,” so make sure to munch on some sisig, kakanin, and other local dishes at popular restaurants like Susie’s Cuisine. You can also pass by the Mabalacat Public Market on your way out for some traditional souvenirs.
