Makati

Makati

The Philippines is known for its pristine beaches and mountains, but that doesn’t mean you should just bypass the country’s National Capital Region (NCR), more commonly known as Metro Manila. With sixteen cities making up NCR, there’s more to see and do than just charge your phone at the airport.

One of the sixteen cities to explore is Makati City. Located right in the middle of Metro Manila, it has become the country’s financial and business center and is called home by many expats. High-rise buildings, world-class hotels, and classy shopping centers dot the Makati skyline, making this city the epitome of cosmopolitan living.

Makati City is the home of luxury hotels, like the Peninsula, Shangri-La, and Raffles, but it won’t be difficult for budget travelers to find places to stay as well. Condominiums and service apartments give visitors other options when it comes to lodging.

Once finding a place to stay is checked off your to-do list, the next thing to do is explore the city. With many shopping malls like Greenbelt, The Landmark, and Power Plant Mall, Makati is full of great places that are sure to entertain. Makati’s also got a wide variety of gastronomical experiences in store like French multi-course dining, hole-in-the-wall eats, or third wave cafes.

While the good eats tickle the taste buds, the museums and galleries around Makati are sure to tickle the brain. Children and adults alike will enjoy learning about Philippine history and artifacts in the Ayala Museum, or the art in design at the Yuchengco Museum. Museo ng Makati is a refreshing sight if you’re tired of looking at tall buildings, as it is located in a classic 19th century Manila house.

Despite being highly urbanized, Makati still has a lot of greenery and open spaces. Places like Circuit Makati integrated its entertainment space with the outdoors, making it perfect for concerts, family picnics, and night food markets. Other markets like the Salcedo Community Market offer a chance to go outdoor shopping and carry a wide selection of food products that can’t be found anywhere else.

For night owls and party animals, Makati is known to be the Philippine version of “the city that never sleeps.” There are many restaurants, bars, and clubs that keep the city bright well into the night, like 12 Monkeys, a popular venue for local artists, or Filling Station, a diner that’s open 24 hours.
