Malapascua Island

Malapascua Island

Sun, sand, and sharks. You can find all of these and more at a tiny island called Malapascua, just a few hours away from Cebu City.

In fact, Malapascua is so small that you can easily walk from one end of the island to another and back in just a matter of two hours. But don’t count out Malapascua just because of its size. It’s actually home to some of the best diving and snorkeling spots in the country.

Malapascua is popular among experienced and beginning divers alike because it’s one of the very few places in the world where you can spot thresher sharks. Known for their unusually shaped tails, these sharks can be spotted at Monad Shoal and Gato Island. If you’re lucky, you may even see a few manta rays in the area.

If you’d rather snorkel, Malapascua boasts a number of good spots to do just that. Check out the wreck sites that you can find under the island’s waters. Did you also know that Malapascua is located right at the center of the Coral Triangle? This may help explain the abundance of marine wildlife that you can spot while underwater.

Beach bums will also find themselves at home here. Malapascua has several white sand beaches where you can relax or take a dip in. The waters here are always clear and always seem to be at just the right temperature.

If you’re feeling famished from all that exploring you did under the island’s water, don’t worry. Malapascua has quite a few restaurants and bars where you can chow down on local and international favorites.

Check out Ging-Ging’s Garden Restaurant if you’re looking for more of a budget-friendly eat. Meals here are under ₱100 (US$2)! Or have a romantic dinner at the beachside Ristorante Angelica, which serves up authentic Italian food.

Hoping to try out some local cuisine? Eat some tambayang, a type of shellfish that’s boiled with salt and lemongrass.

Don’t worry too much about finding a place to stay either. Malapascua has a number of resorts and hotels for you to choose from, ranging from the budget-friendly to the little more high-end.

Malapascua is magnificent all year-round, but the best time to visit this island is between the months of December to April. Just make sure to bring enough cash on hand, as there aren’t any banks or ATMs to be found on the island.

So maybe the next time you’re in Cebu City, why not make a trip to Malapascua Island? Who knows, you might just end up making a few underwater friends along the way.
