Mambajao is the capital of the tiny island of Camiguin, which lies just off the coast of Northern Mindanao.
This small municipality is home to one of the most explosive volcanoes in the country, Mt. Hibok-Hibok. The volcano hasn’t shown signs of activity recently and makes for a moderately challenging climb.
The jump-off point for the Mt. Hibok-Hibok climb is a popular tourist destination: the Ardent Hot Springs. The warm waters are about 37°C to 39°C. The natural pools are shaded by tall trees, and trickle down mossy steps. These therapeutic springs are especially great after the day-long hike to Mt. Hibok-Hibok.
The geographic location of Mambajao attracts beach lovers and divers from around the country. Mambajao’s coastline faces the Bohol sea, and the arrival of tourists led to several beach resorts cropping up in the area.
For an authentic island experience, check in at the Camiguin Action Geckos Dive and Adventure Resort. It’s designed to blend in with the natural surroundings, and welcomes its visitors with lush greens. Guests can choose to stay in private cottages and bungalows, or rent one of their traveler rooms.
The waters of Bohol Sea make Mambajao an excellent diving destination. The island’s volcanoes led to beautiful underwater lava formations, which are now home to colorful coral reefs and gardens. Marine creatures like sharks, manta rays, and turtles are uncommon around the island, but you may be able to spot unique seahorses and tropical fish.
Catch a ride to the foot of Mt. Timpoong, near central Mambajao, to see the Katibawasan Falls, which stand at over 70 meters (230 feet). The icy cold waters fall to a rock pool surrounded by plants and flowers, and are great for a swim on a hot day. Rock tables and paved roads around the Katibawasan Falls make this a popular summer picnic destination.
