Mandaue

It may be a large city, but Mandaue is usually overlooked by tourists. The city is perhaps best known for the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge, which connects the main island of Cebu to the island of Mactan, but thankfully, Mandaue has a lot more to offer than just that.

Dubbed the “Bibingka (rice cake) Capital of the Philippines,” Mandaue is home to what many would say in the best bibingka in the country. Bibingka is a traditional Filipino treat, usually topped with butter and shredded coconut, served during the Christmas season. Nowadays though, it’s eaten for breakfast, as an afternoon snack, or for dessert.

Mandaue-style bibingka, in particular, is known for its slightly acidic aftertaste, because it’s made with tuba, a type of local liquor.

There are a few heritage and historical sights to be found in the city too. There’s the National Shrine of St. Joseph. Built in the 1600’s by Jesuit priests, the shrine features ivory statues of St. Joseph and the Child Jesus.

There’s also the Mandaue Presidencia. The Mandaue Presidencia is a building done in the Neo-Grec style and currently serves as the seat of power for the local government, being the office of the city’s mayor.

Another heritage site is the Bantayan sa Hari. The watch tower was built by the Spanish in the 19th century to warn the townspeople of incoming pirates and raiders. Although the area nowadays is surrounded by gas stations rather than pirates, the Bantayan sa Hari still provides you with a breathtaking view of the city’s horizon.

There’s also a monument here commemorating Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio, two of the country’s national heroes. Apart from remembering the work of the two heroes, the monument also houses a public library.

Mandaue City is also famous for the Traslacion (meaning passage in Spanish). Held just before the Sinulog Festival, the traslacion involves the moving of the images of the Santo Nino and the Lady of Guadalupe from Cebu City to the National Shrine of St. Joseph. The images spend a night in the shrine, where devotees flock to pay their respects to them.

Then, just before the crack of dawn the next day, the images are brought back to Cebu City through a foot and water procession. The water connecting the two cities are full of colorful boats while the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge fills up with onlookers and devotees. It’s one way to truly experience Filipino Catholic devotion. But this only happens in January, so make sure to head over to the city then.

Mandaue City may not be as popular as Cebu City or Mactan Island, but it certainly is the city that you should explore next.
