Manila

Manila is said to be an assault on your senses. The city is hot as well as crowded—with a population of nearly two million people calling the city home—and the traffic jams are endless.

But despite the bad reputation that the capital city gets, it is one of the most culturally and historically rich places in the Philippines. Intramuros, for example, was one of the first cities established by Spanish colonizers during the late sixteenth century. Nicknamed the “Walled City,” Intramuros is home to various landmarks that show the rich colonial history that the Philippines has to offer. Fort Santiago, formerly a military fortress, is perhaps now best known as the place where national hero Jose Rizal was held prior to his execution. The San Agustin Church is the oldest stone church in the country and managed to survive World War II. One of the best ways to see the walled city is to take a walking tour with artist and activist Carlos Celdran.

Aside from the Spanish-influenced Intramuros, Manila is home to one of the first Chinatowns in the world. Located in the district of Binondo, Manila’s Chinatown grew out of a need for a settlement area for newly baptized Chinese immigrants. The Binondo Church reflects this, with its architecture being a mix of both Spanish and Chinese influences. Binondo is also one of the best places in the country to get authentic Hokkien cuisine.

Manila is also known for its rich art scene. The National Art Gallery, formerly an old congress building, is home to several works of classical art by Filipino artists such as Juan Luna and Fernando Amorsolo. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cultural Center of the Philippines house more modern artwork by contemporary artists.

Manila is also a shopper’s paradise. Apart from the various malls that dot the city’s landscape, Divisoria, arguably the country’s most famous wholesale market, can be found here as well. The malls offer everything from luxury to local brands while the markets can get you bargains on anything from fruits and vegetables to furniture and appliances.
