Masbate

It may not be the most sought out destination in the Bicol region, but Masbate province is an interesting place to be nonetheless.

The boomerang-shaped island is characterized by its white sand beaches as well as farm lands and mountains that are ideal for cattle raising. It’s the reason why Masbate is known as the “Ranch Capital of the Philippines.”

Masbate is cowboy country! In fact, it’s the only province in the Philippines (and in Asia) to have its own rodeo show. Held every April, the Rodeo Masbateño features over 10 rodeo events, including bullfighting.

But don’t worry if you’re not much of a landlubber, Masbate has quite a few water-based activities to choose from.

For those hoping to interact with aquatic wildlife, there’s the Buntod Reef Marine Sanctuary, considered to be the second most resilient marine sanctuary in the Philippines. Aside from swimming with fishes, the area also has a sandbar that is usually devoid of people, making it an ideal spot for those who want to get in some alone time.

There’s also Ticao Pass, just off the coast of the province. This is known as the Manta Bowl, as there are numerous manta rays swimming in the area. Don’t worry, they’re a lot more friendly than their cousin, the sting ray. Manta rays are also naturally curious creatures, so don’t be afraid if you suddenly find one swimming alongside you.

If you’d rather spend your time above the water, there’s Bituon Beach. Called the “Star of Masbate,” this beach features clear turquoise waters surrounded by lush greenery and limestone formations.

Another area of interest is the Pawa Mangrove Ecosystem and Wildlife Park. Aside from being a great place to do some birdwatching, the park also features a 1.3 kilometer (4,300 feet) bridge over the ocean that connects two barangays. It’s a good way to get some exercise while enjoying the natural sights that Masbate has to offer.

Speaking of natural sights, a must-see is the Catandayagan Falls just off the coast of Monreal town. Standing at over 60 feet (18 meters), the falls directly deposits its water into the ocean, being just one of the few waterfalls in the country to do so.

Masbate is perhaps one of the most underrated destinations in the country, but it really doesn’t have to be. Maybe the next time you’re looking for a place that’s off the beaten path, you should check into visiting this island province just in the south of Luzon.
