Mati, Davao Oriental is another must-see if you’re touring around Mindanao. It is the capital city of Davao Oriental in southeastern Mindanao and is also the only city of that province. Though not as known as Boracay or El Nido, Mati City is home to fine, white sand beaches, lush islands, and low-key historical museums, making it one of Mindanao’s hidden gems.
After visiting Davao City, why not go on a road trip with your friends to Mati City? If you’re into surfing and beach-bumming but don’t want to spend a lot, Mati is the place to be. If you want to go island hopping, there are three beautiful ones you can choose from, Pujada Island, which is untouched and unspoilt, making it a wonder to behold. Thirty minutes away from Pujada is Waniban Island, smaller than Pujada, but just as majestic. It also has huts for visitors to rest in. After visiting both islands, be sure to drop by Oak Island. It’s basically just a sand bar so be sure to go there before it hits high tide!
Aside from these three islands, Mati boasts of Dahican Beach, where most visitors go for surfing. You’ll fall in love with the big waves and the soft sand of the beach. You don’t have to go to California to experience fun like this. Other than that, Mati City is famous for its Sleeping Dinosaur. When standing opposite this natural land formation, it looks like a giant Brachiosaurus sleeping on the shore. It’s gorgeous to witness and great for your photo ops!
Well, it doesn’t end with just the natural wonders, they made sure to preserve their history, as well. Subangan Museum is home to diverse natural findings from Mati throughout the years, with displays of ancient animal skeletons, and even their achievements as Matinians. The museum houses representations of their culture and their discoveries, making it all the more interesting.
Mati City is only two to three hours away from Metro Davao, a great escape from the busy city life. Why not pay a visit and satisfy your wanderlust?
