Misamis Oriental

In Northern Mindanao lies a province whose coastline is indented by two bays: Macajalar and GIngoog. The province of Misamis Oriental is a land rich in natural resources with its many beaches, waterfalls, and freshwater springs.

Getting to Misamis Oriental is no problem. Domestic flights from Manila to the province’s capital, Cagayan de Oro, are available daily and are about an hour and a half long.

Go spelunking and explore the Monigue Cave in Cagayan de Oro. This cave, located in Barangay Mambuaya, greets trekkers at its entrance with water flowing from an underground stream. Entering the cave means going through a tight squeeze. The narrow opening has only six inches of airspace between the ceiling and the water, meaning you’ll have to go underwater to enter the cave. The journey is worth the stunning views of stalactites and stalagmites that line the cave floors and ceiling.

Take a trip to El Salvador and visit the Divine Mercy Shrine. The city is home to a statue of Jesus the Divine Mercy that stands at 15 meters (49 feet).

Misamis Oriental is also blessed with 33 beaches, some of which are jumpoff points to excellent diving spots. Head to the Matangale Alibuag Dive Resort for a full range of water activities. Go scuba diving over colorful coral reefs, or spot dolphins and whale sharks from a boat. Nature lovers will also enjoy the resort’s beautiful orchid garden.

A popular tourist destination is the neighboring island of Camiguin. This province is famous for its Lanzones (fruit from a type of mahogany tree) Festival and white sand beaches. To get to the island, you can board a ferry from Balingoan Port in Misamis Oriental.

The waters between Balingoan Port and Camiguin Island are teeming with coral reefs and tropical fish, making this a great less-crowded dive spot.

Visit the natural wonder of the Libon-Lawit Waterfalls in Gingoog City, which is known as the City of Waterfalls. Water coming from one stream flows into three different falls in the city.

The highest are the Tiklas Falls, which stand at 120 feet (36.6 meters) and fall into an oval swimmable pool at the bottom. The nearby Kilubag Falls’ rushing waters can be heard for miles as it passes through an echoing cave. Visitors can also hike to the top of the Bangbang Falls and take in the view of Gingoog River.

Renting a boat for about ₱1,000 (about $22) can get you to Agutayan Island in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental. This small and bare sandbar with fine, white sand is lacking in trees and shelter from the harsh sun, but is frequented by divers and snorkelers. The area of Agutayan Island was declared a marine sanctuary, making it illegal to fish in its surrounding waters. Spot hundreds of fish and marine creatures like black jacks, clownfish, and the occasional sea turtle.

Thrill-seekers must head to the Lasang Secret Adventure Eco-Tourism Park in Initao. Climb up on a spiral staircase of 74 steps into monkey-laden trees, and cross shaky rope bridges that are suspended a hundred feet off the ground. The adventure ends with a zipline through the treetops back to the park.

The Mt. Balatukan Range is a protected natural park where you’ll find the massive volcano, Mt. Balatukan. Misamis Oriental is also home to the 6th highest mountain in Northern Mindanao: Mt. Mangabon.
