Mountain Province

Mountain Province is a province of cool highlands sitting right in the heart of the Central Cordillera Mountain Range, the country’s biggest and highest chain of mountains. While the roads leading here may be winding, misty, and even bumpy at times, the breathtaking sights you’ll find in this “spelunker’s delight” and “weavers paradise” make it well worth the trip.

Start with the province capital of Bontoc, where you can brush up on the place’s history by visiting the Bontoc Village Museum and the over 3000-year-old Alab Petroglyphs. Travelers can also take a dip in the mineral-rich waters of Mainit Hot Springs, explore Ganga Cave, or journey to the picturesque Maligcong Rice Terraces in the small upland town of Maligcong.

Those feeling a little more adventurous can try paragliding above Bontoc for a sweeping view of its rice terraces, mountain ranges, and the majestic Chico River. One flight usually lasts around 15-20 minutes, but if you’re lucky, the weather might allow you to enjoy the idyllic view of Bontoc for 45 minutes or longer.

Once you’re done exploring Bontoc, head to the backpackers’ haven of Sagada. Take a walk down to Echo Valley, where you’ll find the Igorot tribe’s sacred hanging coffins perched on the side of majestic limestone cliffs. The trip to the valley is already a scenic wonder in itself thanks to the trails dotted with towering pine trees.

Other favorite activities among travelers include trekking to the Bokong and Bomod-ok waterfalls, going white water rafting in the upper Chico River, and spelunking in the magnificent Sumaguing Cave.

Travelers also flock to Sagada to witness the breathtaking sunrise from Kiltepan Peak. From here, you can watch as the sun slowly rises above the misty mountains of Cordillera. You can also catch some of the province’s most captivating golden sunsets in Besao, a town located less than an hour away from Sagada.

While Bontoc and Sagada may be Mountain Province’s most popular attractions, you’ll find plenty of other interesting sights by venturing to the province’s other municipalities. Head to the humble Igorot village of Cagubatan in Tadian to see its enchanted eels. According to centuries-old beliefs, these mystical eels possess wings that allow them to travel to other places at night.

If it’s hiking spots you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong in a place called “Mountain Province.” Try hiking up Sagada’s highest peak, Mt. Ampacao, or journeying to the summits of Mt. Polis and Mt. Pagturao for a panoramic view of Chico River. You can also enjoy an equally stunning view of Chico River from the town of Sabangan.

Don’t forget to stop by the Mountain Province Trade Center in Bontoc on your way out for some authentic Mountain Province souvenirs. If you want a more hands-on experience, head to the textile weaving workshops in Samoki, Sabangan, and Sagada. Here, travelers can learn the traditional art of backstrap weaving and take home their very own hand-woven creations.
