Negros Occidental

With vast sugar plantations covering many of Negros Occidental’s countrysides, it’s no wonder why the province is known as the “sugar bowl of the Philippines.” Discover the history behind Negros Occidental’s thriving sugar industry and marvel at its countless cultural and natural landmarks with a visit to the country’s famed “sugar capital.”

Start by visiting the provincial capital, Bacolod City, the renowned “city of smiles” and home of the colorful MassKara Festival. Learn more about the history and culture of Negros Occidental by touring the Negros Museum and Dizon-Ramos Museum. You can also take a walk around historical sites like the San Sebastian Cathedral, Palacio Episcopal, and the Fountain of Justice.

No trip to Negros Occidental would be complete without a visit to The Ruins in Talisay City. Built by local sugar baron Don Mariano Ledesma de Lacson, this 19th century ancestral mansion was burned down in World War II. Today, only the building’s skeleton remains, but tourists are still captivated by its neo-Romanesque columns and grand architecture.

From Talisay City, make your way up north to the famous “living city museum,” Silay City. You’ll find over 30 ancestral houses in the city, including the grand Balay Negrense. Visitors can tour the museum and discover the lifestyle of its previous owner, a 19th-century sugar baron.

After touring Silay City’s ancestral homes, drop by the Romanesque-inspired San Diego Pro-Cathedral to see the only domed church in Negros Occidental. You can also learn more about the province’s history by visiting the historic Cinco de Noviembre Revolution Marker, which commemorates the successful Negros Revolution against Spanish colonizers.

Once you’ve explored Negros Occidental’s famous landmarks, head on over to one of the province’s stunning tropical beaches for some rest and relaxation. In Silay City, visitors can stroll along the brown sand shores of Sugar Beach, go diving around the wreck sites of Campomanes Bay, or lounge in the luxury and diving resorts of Punta Ballo Beach.

If you’re looking for a secluded getaway, catch a boat ride to Carbin Reef, the center of the 32,000-hectare Sagay Marine Reserve. Surrounded by nothing but the pristine waters of Asuncion Pass and the Visayas Sea, this gleaming white sandbar is the perfect relaxation spot. Go snorkeling beneath its waters and you’ll find enchanting coral reefs, large schools of fish, and, if you’re lucky, the occasional sea turtle.

One of the best places to go snorkeling and diving is Danjugan Island, a marine and wildlife reserve off the coast of Cauayan City. The island is home to mangroves, lagoons, limestone caves, rare wildlife species, and diverse coral reefs teeming with all kinds of sea creatures.

Climbing enthusiasts should definitely visit Kanlaon Volcano. Known for being the Philippines’ largest active volcano and Visayas’ highest peak, this majestic volcano is a favorite spot for mountain climbers. Visitors can also go trekking in Patag Valley, located between the highlands of Mt. Silay and Mt. Marapara.

You’ll find many other natural wonders to visit all around the province. Some popular spots include the Kipot Twin Falls in Bago, the Obong Cave in Hinoba-an, the Matlag and Mamara Caves in Sipalay, and the Choco Hills in San Carlos.

Make sure to grab some popular local pastries and confectionaries like guapple pie, piaya, barquillos, pastel de mangga, and dulce gatas before leaving so you can share a piece of your sugary Negros Occidental experience with your loved ones back home.
