Nueva Ecija

Nueva Ecija is best known for being the largest province and biggest rice producer of Central Luzon, thus earning it the title of “Rice Bowl of the Philippines.” Aside from being an agritourism site, this sprawling province is also home to an array of natural and man-made wonders, including one of the largest and cleanest dams in the entire country.

Catch a glimpse of the province’s past by visiting Cabanatuan City, its glorious former capital and the famed “Tricycle Capital of the Philippines.” Take a tricycle around the city and tour landmarks like the Old Provincial Capitol, the Cabanatuan Cathedral, and the historic death place marker of the Philippine hero, Gen. Antonio Luna.

One of Cabanatuan City’s most significant historical sites is the Pangatian War Memorial in Camp Pangatian. The monument immortalizes the daring and successful attempt of Filipino guerrillas and American soldiers to rescue 516 prisoners from the camp, which became a concentration camp during the Japanese occupation.

You can also pass by the province’s current capital, Palayan City. Travelers can check out the current provincial capitol building and Fort Ramon Magsaysay, the city’s most famous tourist spot. Known as “Fort Mag” to the locals, this land of lush greenery and rolling hills houses the Philippine Army’s 7th Infantry Division and is also used for various military training exercises.

Continue your heritage tour of Nueva Ecija by visiting its centuries-old churches, starting with the Parish of the Three Kings in Gapan City. Built in the mid-1800s by Augustinian friars, this adobe and brick structure is the largest and oldest church in the entire province. You can also visit the grand Spanish-era churches of Penaranda, Nampicuan, Carranglan, and Pantabangan.

History buffs will find plenty of interesting sites to check out all around the province, like Barrio Labi in Bongabon, the resthouse of former Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon and his family. Other historical landmarks worth visiting include the World War II memorial in Dalton Pass and the Grand Sedeco House, which used to be frequented by the Philippine hero, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo.

One must-see for nature lovers is the Minalungao National Park, a stunning natural masterpiece tucked away in General Tinio. Here, guests can marvel at the 16-meter-tall limestone formations bordering both sides of the scenic Peñaranda River. You can also explore the nearby limestone caves, relax on a floating bamboo raft, or go swimming in the river’s refreshing teal blue waters.

Those looking for more adventurous activities can journey to the Gabaldon Falls, Binbin Falls, or the Pajanutic Falls, a 15-meter-high cascade that is popular among picnickers and nature trekkers. At the foot of Mt. Amorong, you’ll find the majestic, 100-foot-high Gen. Luna Falls and the Burburayok Springs, whose warm waters are believed to be therapeutic.

Travelers can also visit the Pantabangan Dam, climb up the 100 steps of curved stone on Mt. Olivette, or immerse themselves in nature at the Aurora Memorial National Park, a protected natural haven nestled within the Sierra Madre mountain range between Nueva Ecija and Aurora.

Complete your tour of the Philippines’ “rice granary” by enjoying the PhilRice experience at the Philippine Rice Research Institute. In line with its goal of promoting “rice agritourism,” the institute offers guests an educational tour of the complex, complete with agricultural adventures and leisure activities like rice planting, harvesting, boating, fishing, and kayaking.

Of course, you can’t leave without sampling local delicacies like tinumis (stew of pork innards and blood) and sinampalukang manok (chicken in tamarind soup). You’ll find several well-loved restaurants that serve up authentic Nueva Ecija cuisine in Cabanatuan City, like Hapag Vicentico’s, which prides itself as the famed “Hapag Kainan ng bawat Novo Ecijano.

Don’t forget to buy some tasty and sweet souvenirs from local favorites like Puno’s Ice Cream, Edna’s Cakeland, and Shing Fong Bakery. Another iconic pasalubong travelers shouldn’t miss is the uniquely sweet Batutay Longganisa (local sausage).
