Palawan

Palawan

The largest province in the country, Palawan can be called an island of superlatives. It’s home to what some might consider to be the greatest diving spots, beaches, and islands in the country and maybe even the world.

Palawan is a snorkeler and scuba diver’s paradise. The Tubbataha Reefs National Park, in particular, is one of the most diverse areas in the world in terms of marine life. The park, a nationally protected area, is home to more than 500 species of fish, 300 types of coral and more than ten species of shark, dolphin, and whale. The best season to dive in these parts is between the months of March to June.

The island of Coron is home to other popular diving spots. Check out the Skeleton Wreck area to see sunken ships and planes that were gunned down during World War II.

Another nationally protected area is the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. Essentially an underground river, the park is home to several caves that can be explored by boat. A number of animals can also be found in the area.

Palawan is also a popular island-hopping destination. Honda Bay in Puerto Princesa City, Bacuit Bay in El Nido, and Taytay Bay in Taytay are just some of the popular places for tours. Taytay Bay is particularly special as the area is home to endangered dugongs or sea cows.

Aside from dugongs, you can also spot Irrawaddy Dolphins in Taytay. But the species is close to extinction so make sure to do your part in preserving the area.

The province is home to some of the country’s greatest lakes as well. Lake Kayangan in Coron is considered to be the cleanest lake in the Philippines. There’s also Lake Manguao in Taytay, the biggest lake in the province and a popular destination for birdwatchers in the area.

The country’s longest white sand beach is found in Palawan. Aptly named the Long Beach, it’s found in San Vicente and is 1,400 m (8 miles) of nearly uninterrupted sand.

Palawan is also home to the oldest known settlement of man in the Philippines, the Tabon Caves. Human remains that were found here in the 1960s were well over 20,000 years old while other artifacts dated back to almost 50,000 years ago. Aside from its place in history, the caves are also known for their natural limestone formations.
