Panglao

Near Tagbilaran City of Bohol is the island of Panglao, a place that proves that great things come in small packages. The island and its namesake town may be tiny (with a total land area of 55.37 square kilometers), but it’s home to Bohol’s best beaches and has become one of the top tourist destinations in the country.

The most famous beach of Bohol is Alona Beach, which is at the southern part of the island. This public beach is lined with countless resorts, restaurants, and souvenir shops that cater to the thousands of visitors who walk on its white sands each day. Alona Beach was dubbed “The Next Boracay” because of all the commercial developments and throngs of tourists.

Alona Beach, though crowded, contains a great dive spot in its waters: the House Reef. The reef is not disturbed by strong currents and has clear, blue waters, making this spot perfect for beginner divers and snorkelers. Marine wildlife in this reef include cathedral fish, bat fish, garden eels, and barracudas.

Start your island hopping by renting a bangka (outrigger canoe) from Alona Beach to Bolod Beach, which is only 5 minutes away. The main resort on this beach is the Bohol Beach Club (BBC). Right in front of the resort is the BBC dive spot, where divers can spot eels, water snakes, and frog fish.

The few resorts in Bolod Beach can get crowded quickly, but another option is to rent huts for ₱150 pesos (about $4) a day. For a small additional fee, you can have your hut hooked up with an electrical outlet. For lunch, you can try the freshly caught seafood cooked by the locals, or cook your own food on the public outdoor grill. Overnighters can sleep under the stars or pitch tents on the beach.

During low tide, drop by Puntod Island. This small sandbar used to be called the “Virgin Island,” but is now frequented by tourists and inhabited by vendors. The island is still worth a visit, for here you can taste fresh sea urchin and buko (young coconut) juice.

Panglao is truly a diver’s paradise with the many deep sea finds in its waters. Visit Bagobo Beach go diving at the Arco Point. This dive spot is known for its “Hole in the Wall,” an underwater cave that divers can swim through. The surrounding coral reefs are home to cardinal fish, white-eyed moray eels, and scorpion fish.
