Pasay

Pasay

The gateway to the rest of the Philippines, being the home base of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Pasay City has a lot to offer to first-time visitors and seasoned locals alike.

Named after a princess of a pre-colonial kingdom, Pasay City is where you can see the best of what the local art and theatre scene has to offer, as the Cultural Center of the Philippines can be found here. Built in the 1960’s to preserve, promote and develop arts and culture in the country, the center is home to several theatres and museums.

The Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, more commonly known as the Main Theatre, is the largest theatre in the complex. This is where local dance troupes such as the Bayanihan Dancers and Ballet Philippines normally perform. The theatre also sees production of foreign shows and musicals like “Wicked” and “Phantom of the Opera”.

The Little Theatre and the Studio Theatre, meanwhile, are where you can catch the latest independent productions by the country’s up and coming playwrights and directors. Check out Virgin Labfest, held every June, to see what kind of experimental theatre experiences Filipinos have cooked up.

The GSIS Museo ng Sining (Museum of Art) can also be found in this complex. The museum features over a hundred pieces of art from different Filipino artists. Admission here is free, making it an ideal place to kill time while waiting for the gates of the theatre to open.

Another must-see in the CCP complex is the Coconut Palace. The residence is made entirely out of coconut wood and husks and was originally built by former First Lady Imelda Marcos for as a guest house Pope John Paul II’s visit to the country in 1981.

Pasay City is also a great place to do some shopping. The city is home to the SM Mall of Asia, once the biggest mall in the country. Resorts World Manila is another popular shopping destination in the city. You can try out your luck here too, as the area features a casino.

Head over to Seaside Boulevard to try the freshest and tastiest seafood that Pasay has to offer. Check out any of the local dampas, restaurants where you can bring in any seafood that you bought from the market yourself and have it cooked in any way that you want it.
