Pasig

Pasig

Pasig City lies on the southern tip of the Pasig River, which connects Laguna de Bay and Manila Bay. This city dotted with hotels and high-rise buildings lines the eastern edge of Metro Manila. It used to be the capital of the neighboring Rizal province, and though the title is gone, Pasig still remains a great place to visit and explore.

Rizal province’s seat of government is no longer in Pasig’s barangay of Kapitolyo but the area is still frequented by locals and foreigners alike. The neighborhood of Kapitolyo is now filled with various good eats, from sushi bars to Filipino breakfast cafes, making it a great place to go restaurant hopping.

For fresh and local baked goods, head over to the Dimas-Alang Bakery, an establishment that’s remained standing for 96 years. Dimas-Alang, which is the pen name of national hero Jose Rizal, sells classic Filipino breads and pastries like pandesal, aglipay, and the famous biscuit Hindi Ko Akalain, which translates to, “I never thought…”

Up the street from the Dimas-Alang Bakery is the Pasig City Museum. Guests can learn about Pasig’s rich history as they walk through what was formerly known as Concepcion Mansion. The museum houses some of its original furniture as well as a photo exhibit and a Natural Science Hall.

Another museum to visit is the Lopez Memorial Museum. This museum and library is home to hundreds of rare written works and pieces of art from the Philippines, some belonging to internationally acclaimed artists like Juan Luna and Felix P. Resurreccion Hidalgo.

Immerse yourself in Pasig’s history by visiting Bahay na Tisa, the oldest bahay na bato (stone house) in the city, and the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral, the oldest edifice in the city.

Pasig is also the home of the Dolljoy Factory and Museum. The museum exhibits different galleries with dolls of all kinds, from Native American Indian dolls to dolls displaying the evolution of Philippine costumes over the years. Tours of the factory also allow you to see how dolls are made from start to finish.

For those travelling with more active kids, spend the day at Pasig’s Fun Ranch. This supersized indoor playground complete with farm animals in a petting zoo will surely keep kids busy for hours on end. Kids will also enjoy the Ark Avilon Zoo, the smaller version of its namesake in Rizal, for chances to see exotic animals like pythons and orangutans up close.

Adults and children alike will enjoy the Ace Water Spa in Pasig. Kids can splash around in the spa’s Play and Swim Haven while adults enjoy soothing water jet massages.

Once rejuvenated, visit any of Pasig’s many shopping centers. You can hunt for great bargains in Tiendesitas, or shop for luxury items at Estancia Mall in Capitol Commons. Metrowalk’s Metrotent is the place to be, with car shows, bazaars, and concerts lined up throughout the year.
