Porac

To many people, the province of Pampanga is synonymous to two things: great food and the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo Eruption. The second largest volcanic eruption in the 20th century was so strong that it temporarily decreased global temperature and its effects were felt even in other countries in Asia.

Unfortunately for many residents of Pampanga, it coincided with Typhoon Yunya, locally known as Typhoon Diding, sending wave upon wave of hot flowing lahar down the volcano and into the neighborhoods. Porac, the largest town in the province and one of the oldest, found itself in the path of the lahar that partially or completely buried 9 of its barangays.

Today, sand and rocks still cover a great portion of the town, settling at the sidelines of the riverbank and mixing with its waters. Sand dunes are a common sight and even a simple walk on the streets will result to sediment sticking beneath your shoes. Despite all these, Porac remains to be a thriving community that survived the harshest of calamities but still went on to be a favorite destination for tourists.

Taking advantage of the abundant amount of sand in Porac is Sandbox, an outdoor adventure park nestled in the midst of the mountains. Test your strength and endurance in the Aerial Walk or try the rollercoaster zipline, a twist on an all-time outdoor favorite. For the brave of heart and those looking to scream their lungs out, get on the giant swing and let yourself be swayed back and forth high up in the air.

Another sand-filled tourist favorite has also found its influence reaching Porac. Poracay is a favorite among those looking for a quick day trip or a weekend getaway. Despite the absence of the beaches that its near-namesake is known for, the numerous pools, man-made lake and picnic grounds aim to give guests the best time.

Those who wish to get closer to the famed Mt. Pinatubo can trek up the Miyamit Falls. The trek is challenging but the clean, ice cold water waiting for you at the end makes it all worth it. Be sure to say hi to the aetas you pass along the way and strike a conversation with them if you can.

And no trip to Pampanga is complete without a lot of eating. The Binulu Festival, which happens every November, celebrates what the Kapampangan are known best: cooking. This particular festival highlights the practice of cooking rice and viand with a type of bamboo called bulu. It is one experience you can’t miss and will never get tired of repeating over and over again.
