Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa

With its breathtaking sceneries and thriving ecosystem, it’s no wonder why Puerto Princesa has become a world-renowned tourist destination. This “forest city” of Palawan, dubbed as the “Ecotourism Capital of the Philippines,” is a shining example of the country’s rich biodiversity and natural wonders.

No visit to Puerto Princesa would be complete without journeying through the crystalline waters and breathtaking cave formations of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River. Commonly known as the Underground River, the city’s crown jewel has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

At 8.2 kilometers long, it is said to be the world’s longest navigable underground river, winding underneath a mountain range and eventually exiting into the South China Sea. In truth, the river is only one part of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, which boasts a greatly diverse “mountain-to-sea” ecosystem.

The park represents a significant habitat for biodiversity conservation, and is home to around 800 plant species, 195 bird species, 30 mammals, 19 reptiles, and eight bat species. You can learn more about the area’s biodiversity by visiting the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, or “Crocodile Farm,” and the Palawan Butterfly Ecological Garden and Tribal Village.

Island hopping is another favorite activity in Puerto Princesa, particularly in the Honda Bay area. Jump into a boat and take a tour of the bay’s islets, which are home to several white sand beaches where guests can go swimming or snorkeling.

Of course, Puerto Princesa has a lot more natural gems to offer aside from its famed beaches and underground river. Guests can visit the Maoyon Mangrove site, go spelunking or ride a zipline at Ugong Rock, hike Mt. Bloomfield, or have a romantic night out by firefly watching along the Iwahig River.

Add a unique twist to your Puerto Princesa experience by spending a few hours with the Batak, or “mountain people,” tribe, one of Palawan’s major indigenous groups. The two-hour trek to the Batak Cultural Village involves crossing 12 rivers, but learning about the small tribe’s culture and practices is well worth the trip.

You can also pay a visit to the city’s Iwahig Penal Colony, a famous correctional institute where inmates are allowed to live with their families in a relaxed environment. Inmates are allowed to toil their own farms and produce handicrafts for their livelihood, making the colony an inspiring example for local rehabilitation efforts.

Adventurous foodies can munch on some of Puerto Princesa’s famous tamilok (shipworm) or Crocodile Sisig at Kinabuchs Bar & Grill. But if you aren’t in the mood for extreme exotic eats, you can go for the seafood dishes of the popular KaLui Restaurant.

When it comes to souvenirs, you can’t go wrong with the sweet crinkles and broas of Baker’s Hill and the authentic woven goods of Binuatan Weaving Center. You can also buy crocodile meat at Croconatics, just in case you find yourself missing the city’s exotic cuisine back home.
