Rizal

One of the provinces in the CALABARZON region is Rizal. This province is named after the Philippines’ national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Manileños and foreigners alike will find a lot to do in a great weekend destination like Rizal, which is about an hour’s drive east of Manila.

Hundreds of Filipino Catholics troop to Rizal during Holy Week. The numerous churches in this province make it the perfect place to go sightseeing while completing the Stations of the Cross (a Catholic tradition where people contemplate on the events of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion) or going on a Visita Iglesia (visit to seven churches). Travelers will especially appreciate the image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage in Antipolo Cathedral, whom visitors pray to for safe trips.

Travel back in time to the late Neolithic era in the Angono Petroglyphs Museum, which can be found in the municipality of Binangonan. Located here is the cave wall that contains the oldest known artwork in the Philippines, as well as the remains of a giant turtle and the tusks and molars of an ancient elephant species.

Support the local art scene by visiting the different galleries and museums in Rizal. Visit the white Greece-inspired buildings that make up Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo and take a walk through its medley of gardens and art installations.

Feast on exotic food like wine-marinated frogs, beetle larva, and fertilized duck egg stew while admiring paintings in the Balaw-Balaw Restaurant and Art Gallery in Angono. Another museum to visit is the Blanco Family Museum. The paintings displayed here are all works done by members of the Blanco family.

Get your hands dirty while enjoying classic Filipino cuisine at the Crescent Moon Cafe. This by-reservation-only restaurant is known for its lutong-bahay (home-cooked) style dishes and pottery studio, where you can take a pottery class and shop for souvenirs.

Take a trip to see U-ugong Park, a private resort that’s owned by renowned artist Rafael Pacheco. Pacheco is known as the Father of Finger and Palm Painting in the Philippines, and hosts workshops in U-ugong Park. The park’s name comes from the Tagalog word for “echo,” for the park used to have rushing waterfalls that echoed around the gardens. Though the falls have dried up, the resort remains an inspiring place to sharpen your art skills.

Cool off in the Wawa Dam, located in the town of Rodriguez. The dam was built in 1909 as a water source for Manila. Wawa Dam is no longer Manila’s water supplier (the Angat Dam has taken up the role), but tourists still flock to the area for a refreshing swim in its rushing waters.

Be wowed by the cascading waterfalls in the Hinulugang Taktak Mountain Resort, which is now a national park. Picnic in the surrounding cottages or take a walk through the dense greenery around the falls.

Rizal’s mountains are great climbing places for beginners. It takes about 2 hours to hike up Mt. Pamitinan, where you’ll find the Pamitinan Cave. The cave was where Philippine revolutionaries like Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto sought refuge in the late 1800’s. Locals in the area say that the walls are inscribed with the names of the revolutionaries who stayed there.

The nearby Mt. Binacayan would also require a half-day hike, making the two mountains a good day trip for mountaineers.

Kids and kids at heart will enjoy a trip to the Avilon Zoo. It is the largest zoo in the Philippines in terms of land area and number of animals. The zoo houses over 600 species of exotic animals, including the civet cat, Mexican red knee tarantula, saltwater crocodile, and the spotted hyena.

Take a boat to the neighboring Talim Island. Rumor has it that there is treasure on the top of the island’s Mt. Tagapo, whose summit is a gaping pit. The island is also home to fishing communities who live in huts over the water.
