Sagada
Tucked away in the highlands of Mountain Province is the small and peaceful town of Sagada. Known as a haven for backpackers and adventurous travelers, this humble town promises unforgettable experiences to anyone who wishes to discover its idyllic rice terraces, majestic caves and waterfalls, delectable cuisine, and rich cultural heritage.
If you’re a morning person, you might want to get up extra early during your stay in Sagada to witness the breathtaking sunrise from Kiltepan Viewpoint. Journey up to this peak before dawn and watch the sun as it rises slowly above the misty mountains of Cordillera to reveal the beautiful rice terraces of Kilong, Tetep-an, and Antadao below.
One of the attractions Sagada is best known for is Echo Valley, where you’ll find the Igorot tribe’s sacred hanging coffins perched on the side of towering limestone cliffs. Ancient Igorots believed that positioning these coffins in such a way would bring their loved ones closer to heaven.
Sagada is also a haven for spelunkers thanks to its magnificent cave systems. Travelers can explore the large chambers, unique rock formations, and deep natural pools of Sumaguing Cave, the province’s most popular spelunking attraction. Another popular cave is the Lumiang Burial Cave, where you’ll find an entire wall of wooden coffins stacked on top of one another.
Those feeling a little more adventurous can brave the Cave Connection, where participants make their way from the entrance of Lumiang Burial Cave to the chambers of Sumaguing Cave in a tour that lasts around three to four hours.
If you prefer trekking under the open sky, try journeying to Bomod-ok Falls and Bokong Falls, two of Sagada’s most captivating cascades. Bomod-ok Falls, or “big falls,” is a 200-foot waterfall hidden deep within a valley in Barangay Fidelisan. Getting there may involve a tiring hike through rice terraces and steep trails, but the falls’ cool and refreshing waters make it well worth the effort.
Bokong Falls, or “small falls,” on the other hand, is just a short walk away from the town center, making it a popular choice for travelers who prefer a lighter trek. This 20-foot-tall cascade’s deep natural basin and slightly warmer waters make it perfect for swimming.
Daring travelers can also head to Southern Sagada and take on the extremely challenging trek to Pongas Falls, which involves passing through hanging bridges, rice terraces, cliff edges, and a few slippery and rocky trails.
Other popular activities among travelers include visiting the historic St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, watching the sunset at Lake Danum, hiking up Mt. Ampacao, and touring the Gaundayan Museum. Christine Aben, the museum’s owner, will happily share stories about Sagada’s rich culture, history, and artifacts to any guest so try chatting with her while you’re there.
If you want to learn more about the Mountain Province’s traditional art of textile weaving, check out the Sagada Weaving Complex, where you can watch locals create colorful fabrics using traditional wooden weaving looms. You can also learn the art of pottery and purchase some authentic Sagada ceramics at Sagada Pottery.
Don’t forget to take breaks in between tiring adventures to sample some of Sagada’s most renowned delicacies and foodie joints. Start your day right with coffee and a hearty breakfast at Bana’s Cafe and Restaurant, re-energize during lunchtime with a filling comfort meal at Salt and Pepper Diner, and treat yourself to some classic American-style dinner at Log Cabin.
Dessert lovers can indulge in popular Sagada treats like Lemon Pie House’s signature lemon pie, Sagada Brew’s Choco Lava Cake, and Yoghurt House’s homemade yoghurt served with strawberries, banana, and granola. You can also try out the vegan and vegetarian dishes at Gaia Cafe and Crafts, which sits atop a cliff and offers a great view of Kapay-aw Rice Terraces.
Before heading back down to the city, don’t forget to sample Sagada’s patupat (sticky rice dessert), blueberry muffins, and Bugnay wine (rice wine). You might want to buy extra servings too so you can enjoy the province’s iconic delicacies back home.
